BANKING AND FINANCE

India’s current account deficit narrows to 1.3% of GDP

India’s current account deficit narrowed to 1.3% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in the fiscal third quarter, from 1.5% in the year earlier as trade deficit contracted. Data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) showed trade deficit during the October-December quarter narrowed to $34 billion from $38.6 billion during the same period in 2014-15.

  • CAD mirrors the difference between domestic savings and domestic investment, and conveys the extent of this gap that needs to be bridged by foreign savings.
  • CAD narrowed to 1.4% of GDP in the nine months ended 31 December, from 1.7% in the corresponding period of 2014-15.
  • India’s merchandise exports have been declining continuously since December 2014 because of sluggish global demand and low commodity prices, particularly oil.
  • The Economic Survey released before the 29 February budget said India’s external sector outcome continues to be strong and sustainable because of strong macroeconomic fundamentals and low commodity prices.
  • The survey said that while global concerns over China’s economic growth and normalization of the monetary policy in the US may affect global financial flows, with policy reform initiatives and a strong macroeconomic outcome, the deficit in the current account is likely to be more than fully financed through stable flows and the volatility in global financial markets may affect the exchange rate less than in other emerging economies.

Paytm ties up with PVR to sell online movie tickets

Cinema exhibition chain PVR cinemas and mobile payments and commerce platform Paytm have announced a strategic relationship that will bring PVR’s movie tickets to Paytm’s e-commerce platform as a part of its nationwide foray in the online movie ticket segment.

  • In the first year of this relationship, PVR targets to sell tickets worth Rs 250-300 crore on Paytm’s e-commerce platforms in addition to revenues from ticket sales at box offices and other channels.
  • This is another initiative to augment the box office revenues by reaching out to more consumers and achieving better penetration into micro markets.
  • Paytm is aggressively extending its presence in new verticals as a part of its strategy to be ubiquitous in daily life of its customers.
  • While the movie ticketing market in India is worth around $2 billion growing 10% annually, the online movie ticketing market is only 15% of the total domestic market.
  • Paytm intends to double the share of online movie ticketing market in quick time.
  • It already has over 125 million registered users and clocks 90 million orders per month.
  • Starting this month, PVR tickets and F&B products will be sold and marketed on Paytm portal’s web, mobile apps and other affiliate channels.

World Puppetry Day – March 21

World Puppetry Day, is observed on March 21 every year. The idea came from the puppet theater Artist Javad Zolfaghari from Iran. In 2000 at the XVIII Congress of the Union Internationale de la Marionnette, (UNIMA) in Magdeburg, he made the proposal for discussion. Two years later, at a meeting of the International Council of UNIMA in June 2002 in Atlanta, the date of the celebration was identified. The first celebration was in 2003.

  • Puppetry is a form of theatre/performance that involves the manipulation of puppets–inanimate objects, often resembling some type of human or animal figure, that are animated or manipulated by a human called a puppeteer.
  • Puppetry takes many forms, but they all share the process of animating inanimate performing objects to tell a story.
  • The physical form of the puppets has always been diverse – the colourful, wooden kathputlis from Rajasthan with large eyes dancing to traditional music, Indonesia’s intricately-carved shadow puppets made of leather that tell the tale of Ramayana and the cute hand puppets made of soft plush from Germany, to name a few.
  • Almost every country has a tradition of puppetry in its rich cultural bouquet.
  • Hindu philosophers have likened god to a puppeteer or a sutradhar, and the universe to a stage, and how he manipulates every act and movement.

Nepal and China sign many agreements

Stung by the bitter lessons from Madhesi blockade of India trade points that caused acute fuel shortage, Nepal signed a transit and transportation treaty with China for its third-country commerce — a move that is likely to end New Delhi’s monopoly over the landlocked Himalayan nation’s trade through Haldia port in Kolkata.

  • The two countries signed the agreement along with nine other treaties in Beijing, a day after Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli began a week-long trip to China. Oli’s maiden visit as the Nepal prime minister comes at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang.
  • The visit is significant in the light of Nepal’s efforts to reduce its decades old dependence on India after Madhesi protestors in southern plains, agitated over the the new Constitution, blocked supply trucks coming in from the southern neighbour.
  • The five-month long blockade caused huge crises as fuel and medicine supplies dried up.
  • The transit agreement with China gives Nepal an option to use the next nearest Tianjin port in China that is 3,000 km from Nepal border.
  • India’s Haldia port is 1,000 km away.
  • Other important agreements signed during Oli’s visit on Monday include an accord on the construction of a bridge in Hilsa, far west Nepal, that will connect the republic with Tibet. Hilsa was a traditional trade route to Nepal.
  • China has also pledged $216-million soft loan to Nepal for construction of a regional airport in the second largest city of Pokhara, some 200 km

  • TB can usually be cured. The treatment usually consists of a combination of drugs that must be taken for at least six months. But the treatment will only be successful if the drugs are taken exactly as required for the entire length of time.
  • If someone has drug resistant TB it means that the bacteria in their body won’t be affected by certain drugs that they are resistant to. The drugs just won’t work. There are two main reasons why people develop it. It can be because the person doesn’t take their drugs properly. It can also be that the bacteria that they are infected with, have come from someone who has already got drug resistant TB.
