World Wetlands Day 2024 is observed on February 02

On February 2, 2024, people all over the world will celebrate World marshes Day, which shows how important marshes are for both people and the environment.

With their varied ecosystems that range from freshwater to marine environments, such as swamps, marshes, and mangroves, wetlands are very important to many species, including humans.

Today is an important warning to protect the world’s important wetlands and bring more attention to the issue.

When and why is World Wetlands Day celebrated?

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands was signed in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran. Every year on February 2, people celebrate World Wetlands Day.

This international agreement to protect and wisely use marshes was a big step forward that made people all over the world realize how valuable they are.

Resolution 75/317 from the UN General Assembly made February 2, 2021, World Wetlands Day. This made the issue even more important.

Why World Wetlands Day 2024 Is Important

Wetlands are home to more than forty percent of all plant and animal species, even though they only cover six percent of the Earth’s area.

Not only are these ecosystems rich in biodiversity, they also do important things like keep floods from happening, clean water, and keep the temperature stable.

Wetlands naturally soak up extra rain and lessen the damage from floods. The plants and soil in wetlands also filter out pollutants, which makes the water cleaner.

The theme for World Wetlands Day 2024

World Wetlands Day 2024’s theme, “Wetlands and Human Wellbeing,” shows how fragile wetland environments are and how they affect people’s health, safety, and well-being.

This theme makes us think about how marshes improve our quality of life by giving us clean water, food, and protection from natural disasters.

It asks people to take steps to protect and restore marshes so that future generations can continue to enjoy their benefits.
