A Mysterious Place is something which has an atmosphere of strangeness or secrecy. The things happening in those places are beyond human power to explain or understand. It is extremely difficult or impossible to understand, explain, or identify what has happened in those kind of places and why it happened. These kind of places are usually surprising as well as haunting in nature.

Ten Mysterious Places in India

1. Rat Temple

A temple for Rats? Yes.. You read it right. There is one temple for Rats. The temple is called Karni Mata Temple. Karni Mata is the incarnation of Goddess Durga. The mysterious temple is situated at Deshnoke, 30 km from Bikaner, Rajasthan. (Click Here to Read the Unknown Facts about Rajasthan). The temple is home to more than 25,000 rats. Innumerable pilgrims visit this temple every year.

What is the Legend about Rat Temple?

It is believed that Goddess Karni Mata turned a troop of soldiers into rats when they abandoned a battle and fled for their lives. Since then these rats have been residing here and have been considered sacred by the pilgrims. The larger population of these rats are black in colour and spotting a white one is considered auspicious because they are believed to be the manifestation of Karni Mata herself.


2. The Village of Twins

Kodinhi is a small village in Kerala’s Malapuram district. The village is famous for its high rate of twins. Most of the families in Kodinhi have witnessed multiple births. According to estimates, there are at least 400 pairs of twins in the village that has a population of 2000 families. An international team of genetic researchers are trying to find the answer to this bizarre phenomenon. While the national average of twin births is not more than 9 in 1000 births, in Kodinhi, the number is as high as 45 in 1000 births.

Although most researchers haven’t been able to determine the reason behind this mystery, some doctors do believe that the answer lies in the chemical makeup of water in the area.

3. The Skeleton Lake

Roopkund is a high altitude glacial lake in the Uttarakhand. It lies in the lap of Trishul massif and is famous for the hundreds of human skeletons found at the edge of the lake. Surrounded by rock-strewn glaciers and snow-clad mountains, the lake is a popular trekking destination. A shallow lake, having a depth of about two metres, Roopkund has attracted attention because of the human skeletal remains that are visible at its bottom when the snow melts. This could be the scariest as well the mysterious places in India.



What could be the reason?

The studies of the skeletons revealed a common cause of death: blows to the back of the head, caused by round objects falling from above. 4. Bheemkund

Bhimkund is a Natural water tank and a holy place in Madhya Pradesh and is located in Chhatarpur District.The water of this kund is magnificently blue. (Click here to read the facts about Madhya Pradesh)

Great Hindu epic Mahabharata links Bhimkund with Pandavas. Tired and weary under the hot scorching sun, Draupadi fainted of thirst. Bhim, the strongest of the five brothers, hit the ground with his gada, water surged out and the pool came into being.

Local Beliefs about Bheemkund

There is saying that depth of Bheemkund is limitless/endless and till date no one is able to find the actual depth of Bheemkund. Few years ago a team from Discovery channel visited Bheemkund and tried to calculate depth of kund but unable to do so.

Locals here believe that Bheemkund is also an indicator of upcoming natural calamities. At the time of Tsunami in 2004 the water level here rose by 15 feet and same is the case at the time of Nepal or other earthquakes.


5. Abandoned Village

Kuldhara is an abandoned village in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan. The village was established around 13th century. It was once a prosperous village inhabited by Paliwal Brahmins. It was abandoned by the early 19th century for unknown reasons. A 2017 study suggests that Kuldhara and other neighbouring villages were abandoned because of an earthquake. It is one of the Mysterious Places in India.



Over years, Kuldhara acquired reputation as a haunted site, and the Government of Rajasthan decided to develop it as a tourist spot in the 2010s. (Click here to read the Facts about Rajasthan)

The local legend claims that while deserting the village, the Paliwals imposed a curse that no one would be able to re-occupy the village. Those who tried to re-populate the village experienced paranormal activities, and therefore, the village remains uninhabited.


6. The Magnetic Hill

Magnet Hill is a “gravity hill” located near Leh in Ladakh, India. The layout of the area and surrounding slopes creates an optical illusion that the downhill road is actually an uphill road. Objects and cars on the hill may appear to roll “uphill” in defiance of gravity when they are, in fact, rolling downhill.

The other two such magnetic hills are in Gujarat. One is near Bhuj (Kalo dungar – the black hills) and other at Tulsi Shyam.


7. The Legend of Bullet Baba

Bandai in Rajasthan is famous for an unexplainable belief among the locals. Om Singh Banna, a native of the region was riding a motorcycle on the Pali-Jodhpur Highway when he met with a fatal accident and succumbed to his injuries back in 1992. The next day the Police took his motorcycle to the nearest Police Station only to discover that it had disappeared the following morning and was found at the same spot of the accident as the day before.

The police kept repeating the exercise for quite some time only to be amused by its ability to go back to the accident spot by itself. It is believed that the spirit of Om Banna still helps anguished travelers traversing through this particular highway till date.


8. Lonar Crater Lake

Lonar Lake is a saline soda lake located at Lonar in Buldhana district, Maharashtra (Click here to read more about Maharashtra). The lake was created by a meteor impact during the Pleistocene Epoch. It is the only known hyper velocity impact crater in basaltic rock anywhere on Earth. This lake, which lies in a basalt impact structure, is both saline and alkaline in nature

The Smithsonian Institution, the United States Geological Survey, Geological Society of India, the University of Sagar and the Physical Research Laboratory have conducted extensive studies of the site. The chemical characteristics of the lake shows two distinct regions that do not mix – an outer neutral (pH 7) and an inner alkaline (pH 11) each with its own flora and fauna. The lake is a haven for a wide range of plant and animal life.


9. The Visa God

Chilkur Balaji Temple is popularly known as “Visa Balaji Temple”. It is one of the oldest temples in Hyderabad. Many people have been visiting this temple primarily to seek Lord Balaji’s blessing for a speedy visa processing. The most surprising part is the fact that it has a one hundred percent success rate. The temple was built during the time of Madanna and Akkanna, the uncles of Bhakta Ramadas. It can be inferred that the temple was built half a millennium ago.

This temple has no hundi and neither accepts any money from devotees. This is one of the special Temples in India with no green channel or privileges for VIP’s. This temple fought and won the right to stay out of government control.


10. A Home for Immortals

It is said that Gyanganj, the dwelling of immortals, is positioned at an isolated valley in the Himalayas. It could be one of the most Mysterious Places in India. This place is called with different names like Shangri-La, Siddhashram or mostly Shambhala. The story of the Gyanganj has been told and retold in Indian and Tibetan culture for many centuries. Tibetan Buddhists believe that at a time of great chaos in the world, the 25th ruler of this special land will appear to guide Earth to a better age.

People believe that this mysterious land artfully camouflages itself, hiding from sight as well as mapping technologies. Some believe that Gyanganj exists in a different plane of reality and thus cannot be detected by satellites.
