9. China’s first high-resolution satellite maps large part of world

The Ziyuan III, China’s first high-resolution stereo mapping satellite for civilian use, has sent back visual data covering 69.45 million square kilometres of the globe since it was launched in January 2012. The satellite produced images of 190 million square kilometres of fields for mapping, land, mining and water conservancy, ridding the country of its reliance on imports of hi-resolution satellite images.

10. Sunscreen killing coral reefs worldwide

Scientists who conducted their research in Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands found that the chemical oxybenzone — used in more than 3,500 sunscreen products worldwide, including those by popular brands such as Coppertone, L’Oreal and Banana Boat — was extremely harmful to fragile coral reefs.

Coral reefs provide economic and environmental services to millions of people through industries like fishing and tourism.

11. Yes Bank inks partnership with Snapdeal and Blue Dart to facilitate faster seller payments

Private sector bank Yes Bank has inked a partnership with Snapdeal, India’s largest online marketplace in terms of sellers transacting on its platform, and leading logistics and transportation company Blue Dart, which will see the financial institution make ‘strategic interventions in the financial supply chains’ of the latter two companies.

Yes Bank had earlier partnered with Snapdeal to implement industry’s first API banking services enabling Snapdeal to process customer refunds within an hour’s time.

12. Facebook launches website to attract minorities to coding

Facebook has launched a new portal geared towards women, students and their parents which have traditionally had less exposure to careers in coding as part of the company’s push to increase minorities in technology. TechPrep is also targeted at parents and guardians, and seeks to analogise coding skills with language skills to make the subject of computer science less forbidding and opaque.

13. Mumbai world’s 11th best bed-n-breakfast value destination

Mumbai has been ranked 11th among the best value destinations in the world for an overnight stay at a four-star hotel that includes breakfast. As per TripIndex Breakfast 2015, a TripAdvisor cost comparison study, Mumbai ranks 11th among the best value destinations for an overnight stay with breakfast costing Rs 9,343.92. Accommodation without breakfast will cost Rs 8,932.44 in the city.

The TripIndex Breakfast 2015 destination list comprises of 37 key cities within the top 37 most searched countries by global TripAdvisor users over the past 12 months.

14. President of India to confer Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowships and Awards for 2014

The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee will confer the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowships and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards for the year 2014 at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan on October 23, 2015. The Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowships (Akademi Ratna Sadasyata) and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards (Akademi Puraskar) are recognized as the most coveted national honours bestowed on performing artists as well as teachers and scholars in the field of performing arts.

15. Sam Pitroda’s autobiography Dreaming Big- My Journey to Connect India released

Autobiography of Sam Pitroda named Dreaming Big: My Journey to Connect India has been launched by Mukesh Ambani. It is written with the help of an American author David Chanoff. The autobiography describes the journey of Satanarayan Gangaram Pitroda (famously known as Sam Pitroda), known as father of Indian telecommunication revolution. Former prime minister Manmohan Singh and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi were present during the launch of the book.

16. Samardeep Subandh appointed as Chief Marketing Officer of Flipkart

Homegrown e-commerce giant Flipkart today announced the appointment of Samardeep Subandh as its Chief Marketing Officer (CMO). In his role as CMO, Samar will be the primary custodian of the Flipkart brand. His focus will be on gaining deeper customer insights, raising the level of customer centricity and driving high level of creativity and quality in all communication.

Samar has over 17 years of experience in the consumer goods industry and spent 15 years with Hindustan Unilever across various marketing, sales and business assignments.

17. Britain signs landmark nuclear deal with China

Britain has signed a landmark nuclear deal with China to build the United Kingdom’s first nuclear power plant since the 1980s. Under this deal, nuclear power plant will be built at Hinkley Point, Somerset near London with total planned investment of 18 billion pound. The Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) of China will contribute 6 billion pounds i.e. one-third of the total planned investment. CGN will have two-thirds stake and Areva will have one-fifth stake. The plant will be become operational by 2025 providing affordable power to Britain.
