1. Typhoon Koppu smashes into northern Philippines

Thousands of people fled as powerful Typhoon Koppu hit the northern Philippines. No casualties have been reported but about 6,500 people were evacuated from their homes and taken to safer ground, and the number was expected to rise as the storm slowly grinds inland across the main island of Luzon.

Koppu downed trees and pylons, leaving two cities and 22 towns without power, while landslides and floods cut off 10 roads and eight bridges across the region.

2. 7th Asia Pacific Conf on Exercise & Sports Sciences

The 7th Asia Pacific Conference on Exercise and Sports Sciences (APCESS) ended in Fariadabad. The three-day event, organised by the Asian Council of Exercise and Sports Science (ACESS), in collaboration with Manav Rachna International University, witnessed discussions, workshops, seminars and symposiums on various topics.

Held in India for the first time, the conference was based on the theme ‘Inter-disciplinary Applied Approach to Health and Performance Enhancement through Sports Science’.

3. Housing.com appoints Mani Rangarajan as CFO

Realty portal Housing.com has appointed Mani Rangarajan as chief financial officer (CFO) to strengthen its senior management team. Mr Rangarajan has held executive level roles in companies such as Citigroup and Yahoo. He has also been involved with several start-ups in India in advisory roles. Housing.com, which was founded in 2012, has made some major appointments at senior level after its board on July 1 this year sacked co-founder and then CEO Rahul Yadav.

4. India among top 10 acquirers in US market this year

India has been ranked among top 10 acquirers in the US market this year with 16 deals valued at $1.7 billion, says Baker & McKenzie. Majority of these deals were in the pharma sector, with six transactions totalling $1.5 billion, as Indian companies seek to increase their scale in the US generics market, said a report by Baker & McKenzie. Most of these acquisitions are funded internally as Indian companies are generally cash rich.

5. Rajasthan Government notifies 5% quota for Gujjars and other SBCs

Rajasthan government has issued a notification to provide 5% quota to Gujjars and other Special Backward Classes (SBC) for which the Assembly has passed a bill last month. The notification issued by the Department of Personnel, states that Rajasthan Specific Backward Classes (Reservation of seats in Educational Institutions in the state and of Appointment and Posts under the state) Act, 2015 (Act No 32) comes into effect from October 16.  The Act will provide 5% reservation in jobs and educational institutes to Gujjars, Banjara, Raibari, and Gadiya Lohar communities in the state.

6. Maharashtra declares drought-like condition in 14,708 villages

The Maharashtra government has declared a “drought-like condition” in 14,708 of the state’s 43,000 villages. This is the second successive year of drought in Maharashtra. In fact, the state has experienced three such calamities in the last four years. The region of Marathwada has been worst-hit, with a drought-like condition declared in every single village. As many as 8,522 villages in the region have been impacted. This accounts for 58% of the drought area in the state.
