Kochi – First Indian city to become the member of World Tourism Cities Federation

Kochi has become the first Indian city to become a member of Beijing-headquartered World Tourism Cities Federation (WTCF) Council. The Kerala Tourism Department has accepted the Council’s invitation to join its league of leading tourism cities across the world. Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany handed over the membership acceptance document to Chinese Ambassador to India Le Yucheng.

The Chinese Ambassador has expressed interest in bringing investment from China to Kerala’s tourism sector, especially for construction of an entertainment city and an oceanarium.

  • The sector is predicted to grow at an average annual rate of 7.9% till 2023.
  • India has a large medical tourism sector which is expected to grow at an estimated rate of 30% annually to reach about ₹95 billion by 2015.
  • The Ministry of Tourism designs national policies for the development and promotion of tourism.
  • In order to boost tourism numbers, Indian Government decided to implement a new visa policy named e-Tourist Visa, allowing visitors to obtain a visa on arrival.
