Introduction:

Kanchan Devi, an Indian Forest Service Officer who comes from the Madhya Pradesh cadre and was born in 1991, has been selected as the Director General (DG) of the Indian Council of Forestry Research Education (ICFRE).

This appointment marks a critical milestone in the organization’s growth and development. Kanchan is the first woman officer to ever hold this important position in the premier council, which is under the jurisdiction of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.

Role of the ICFRE

In the field of forestry research and technology, the Indian Council for Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), which has its headquarters in Dehradun, plays a significant role in providing advice to the Government of India, state governments, and numerous stakeholders, such as farmers, industries, and academicians.

Within the realm of forest conservation, it handles new difficulties that have recently emerged.

Kanchan has proved her knowledge in the field of forestry by virtue of her more than thirty years of experience in a variety of sectors of the industry, including forest management, administration, education, human resource development, research, and extension.

Through her work as a member of the faculty at the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA) in Dehradun, she has made significant contributions to the field of forestry education.

Kanchan Devi’s contributions to the field

Kanchan has been actively working to improve the lives of people living in rural areas by implementing, analyzing, and recommending changes to the regulations that are already available regarding forests.

During the time that she worked at the International Center for Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), where she held the position of Deputy Director for the past four years, she was instrumental in the advancement of human resource development, the accreditation of courses, the promotion of forestry education, and the conduct of research studies on forest policy.

Important Projects and Their Effects

Her achievements include the founding of the Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Land Management (CoE-SLM) as well as the implementation of the Ecosystem Services Improvement Project (ESIP) at the International Center for Forestry and Environmental Research (ICFRE), which was sponsored by the World Bank.

Throughout her tenure at the council, she has been a key figure in the recruitment and promotion of technological officers and scientists.
