1. France Enshrines the Right to Abortion in Its Constitution

On March 4, 2024, France made history by becoming the first country in the world to constitutionally protect abortion.

A combined vote of the two chambers of parliament resulted in the decision, with 780 votes in favor and 72 against. The vote was conducted beneath the ornate dome of Versailles Palace, which is located outside of Paris.

A “guaranteed freedom” in France is abortion, as stated in the amendment. An important step in guaranteeing the protection and upholding of women’s reproductive rights was the decision to write the right to abortion into the Constitution.

The French Constitutional Amendment

With this decision, “the law determines the conditions in which a woman has the guaranteed freedom to have recourse to an abortion” was written into Article 34 of the French constitution, securing the right to abortion.

The independence of women’s bodies and their ability to choose their reproductive health care are fundamental rights that this amendment seeks to safeguard.

Abortion in France: A Legal Tragedy

Despite widespread outrage, a law passed in 1974 in France guaranteed women the right to abortion. By committing abortion to the constitution, we have further solidified its legal protection and made it very difficult for future administrations or courts to repeal this right.

3. India’s Second Spaceport to come up in Tamil Nadu

In Kulasekarapattinam, Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently laid the foundation stone for India’s second spaceport. In addition to advancing India’s space program, the ambitious Rs 950 crore facility will enhance the current spaceport in Andhra Pradesh.

Optimal Site for Launch Efficiency

The new 2,233-acre site in the coastal area of Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu was selected because of its advantageous location, which should result in more efficient launches. Compared to locations inland, its coastal location offers higher fuel savings.

Launch speeds are increased by utilizing Earth’s rotation, achieved by positioning near the equator.

In addition to the tight launch trajectories that are achievable from Sriharikota spaceport, the spaceport’s site allows for the placement of satellites in multiple orbits. With this two-pronged strength, India will further solidify its position as the world leader in small satellite launches.

4. World Wildlife Day

The purpose of celebrating and bringing attention to the plight of all species of animals and plants on March 3rd is known as World Wildlife Day.

The United Nations General Assembly designated this date in 2013 to commemorate the signing of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973. An exploration of digital innovation in wildlife conservation will be the focus for 2024.

Herhbaz Sharif was chosen as Pakistan’s prime minister by the National Assembly on March 3, 2024. Sharif has served as prime minister twice before, first from April 2022 to August 2023, and this is his second time in office.

Divisive Elections Pave the Way

Following the contentious parliamentary elections that took place on February 8th, Sharif was elected.

Delays in announcing the results and allegations of vote-rigging marred the elections. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, which was headed by former prime minister Imran Khan, claimed to have the most seats but is now claiming that their mandate was taken from them through election rigging.

Even yet, the majority of seats were won by a coalition that included Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). With PTI lawmakers expelled from the National Assembly for suspected electoral fraud, Sharif easily won the vote for prime minister with a margin of 201 to 92.
