8. Three Indian-Origin Researchers Win Blavatnik Awards For Young Scientists

Nine scientists from across the UK have been named winners of the renowned Blavatnik Awards For Young Scientists. Three of them are from India.

The awards honor research that is changing health, technology, and how we see the world. There are three categories: Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, and Physical Sciences & Engineering.

Professors Rahul R. Nair, Mehul Malik, and Tanmay Bharat are among the winners. They will be honored at a black-tie gala dinner and award ceremony in London on February 27, 2024. The funds they will get add up to 480,000 pounds.

New Membranes for Efficient Separation by Rahul R. Nair

For making new membranes out of two-dimensional (2D) materials, Rahul R. Nair, a materials scientist at The University of Manchester, was named Laureate in Physical Sciences & Engineering. These will make it possible for separation and filtering devices that use less energy.

Mehul Malik: A Big Step Forward in Quantum Communications

Mehul Malik was praised for making quantum messaging better by using new, cutting-edge methods that take advantage of high-dimensional entanglement, a complicated quantum physics effect.

Because of Malik’s innovations, the usually fragile entanglement can last over long distances and in harsh conditions.

This lays the groundwork for quantum networks that can handle noise and send large amounts of information safely using photons as carriers. Mahlik has a Ph.D. from the New York University of Rochester.

Tanmay Bharat: Imaging the Structures of Microbes at the Atomic Level

It was given to Tanmay Bharat, PhD, from the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (Life Sciences), for creating cutting-edge methods in electron cryotomography (cryo-ET).

So, atomic-level pictures of molecules on the surface of cells are made by bacteria and archaea that are very small. These molecules are made as bacteria and archaea form complex communities, such as biofilms and microbiomes.

Most pathogenic bacteria infect people through biofilm formation, so Bharat’s work has important biomedical consequences.

It also helps us figure out how cell-to-cell interactions changed over time, which is what led to the development of complex life on Earth.
