Singapore ruling party PAP wins 2015 General Elections – Returns to Power

Singapore’s prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong return to power again in a massive victory for the 12th time since independence. It has won every elections since 1965. The PAP got 83 of the 89 seats in Parliament while the opposition Workers’ Party captured six. PAP has won 69.86 percent of the votes cast, according to the Elections Department, compared to 60 percent votes in the 2011 elections. The senior Lee became the country’s first prime minister in 1965 and remained in office until 1990, a period of rapid development and prosperity. His son has been prime minister since 2004.

  • From Singapore’s independence in 1965 to 1981, the People’s Action Party won every single seat in every election held, forming a parliament with no elected opposition MP for almost two decades.
  • Presidential elections have been held since 1993.
  • In 2005: No elections were held because  on 13 August 2005, the Presidential Elections Committee announced that Sellapan Ramanathan Nathan was the only candidate that had received the certificate of eligibility, so he was named the next president without election.
  • Voting is mandatory in Singapore and is based on the first-past-the-post system
  • 2015 Elections:
    •  The governing People’s Action Party (PAP) have secured their 14th consecutive term in office since 1959.
    • This will be the PAP’s third election with Lee Hsien Loong as its Secretary-General, and the country’s first election after the passing of its founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
    • It is also the country’s first election where there are no walkovers in any of the constituencies, as voting will take place in Tanjong Pagar GRC for the first time.
