Bankers Chanda Kochhar and Arundhati Bhattacharya top Fortune’s most Powerful Women List

Bankers Chanda Kochhar and Arundhati Bhattacharya have been ranked as top two in a list of most powerful women in Asia Pacific prepared by the global magazine Fortune. State-run oil marketing company Hindustan Petroleum Corporation’s chairman and managing director Nishi Vasudeva has also made it to the list at fifth rank, same as previous year.

New Board of Directors for Press Trust of India

Hormusji N Cama, Director of Bombay Samachar and Riyad Mathew, Director of Malayala Manorama, were elected as the Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively of the Press Trust of India. The election took place at a meeting of the Board of Directors following the Company’s 67th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in New Delhi.

Sheikh Hasina wins UN award for leadership on climate change

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been announced as one of the winners of the United Nations Champions of the Earth award in recognition of her country’s initiatives to address climate change. The UN Environment Program, which confers the awards, has states that “Serving as Prime Minister of Bangladesh – one of the world’s least-developed countries – Sheikh Hasina has proven that investing in climate change is conducive to achieving social and economic development.”

UN adopts text-based negotiations on UNSC reforms

The UN General Assembly chose the path of text-based negotiations for carrying out Security Council reforms. India’s goal of becoming a permanent member of the UN security council took a significant step forward. However, the US, China and Russia did not contribute to the text, a move which was seen as an attempt to thwart India’s bid for permanent membership of the global body.

India termed as “historic” and “path-breaking” the adoption of the document, saying the decision puts the Inter- Governmental Process formally on an “irreversible text-based negotiations path” and changes the “dynamics” of the negotiations on achieving UNSC reforms. Though the US and Russia have been supporting India’s bid, China has been against any expansion of the Security Council.

India likely to sign FTA with Australia, Chile soon

India is likely to sign the comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) with Australia and Chile soon following a renewed push to the pacts. FTA allows duty-free or low-duty trade in merchandise between the signatories. The department of commerce joint secretary Dammu Ravi said that India is very close to signing FTA with Chile. The GOI is also having next level discussion with Australia for FTA agreement.

Indian scientists decode Tulsi plant genome

Indian scientists have deciphered the entire genetic make-up of Tulsi, a herb widely used for therapeutic purposes. The genome map will help in making new medicines using the plant. A multi-institutional team led by Sowdhamini Ramanathan from the National Centre of Biological Science, Bengaluru revisited the age-old knowledge of the plant and its medicinal effects in their laboratories. The plant synthesises a wide range of bioactive compounds, known for their anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-pyretic and anti-cancer properties.

World Bank ranks Gujarat as most investor-friendly State

Gujarat has come out on top in the World Bank’s first ever ranking of States on the ease of doing business in India. The states were assessed on the implementation, over a six-month period from January to June, of a 98-point reforms agenda. Gujarat implemented 71.14 per cent of the reforms, according to the assessment. Andhra Pradesh came second with a score of 70.12 per cent. These states are followed by Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Ease of Doing Business Index : India Ranks 142 among 189 Economies

India continues to be a tough place for doing business even as the country has improved regulator processes for starting enterprises and trading across borders, according to World Bank. In terms of ease of doing business Index, India is ranked 142nd among 189 countries in the latest rankings issued by the World Bank. Singapore is at the top position, followed by New Zealand. Hong Kong SAR (China) is at the third spot.

Sourav Ganguly To Coach Tripura U-16 And U-19 Teams

Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly assured the Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) that he will return to the state in November to coach the Under-16 and Under-19 teams. Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) secretary Sourav Dasgupta confirmed the news stating that Ganguly would coach the teams in November 2015.

RBI and Nepal Rastra Bank ink MoU for supervisory information exchange

The Reserve Bank of India has signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on ‘Supervisory Cooperation and Exchange of Supervisory Information’ with the Nepal Rastra Bank(NRB). The MoU was signed by Nepal Rastra Bank’s Executive Director Narayan Prasad Paudel and RBI’s Executive Director Meena Hemchandra.

Sports Ministry Grants Recognition to Indian Kalarippayattu Federation as Regional Sports Federation

Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has recognized the Indian Kalarippayattu Federation as Regional Sports Federation with immediate effect. This recognition means granting a major role to the Indian Kalarippayattu Federation (IKF) for promotion and development of Kalarippayattu sport in India.

India and Sri Lanka sign important agreements

Four agreements were exchanged between the two sides. Agreement was exchanged on,
1. Orbit frequency coordination of satellite for SAARC region.
2. MoU was exchanged regarding supply of medical equipment.
3. Letters were exchanged on establishment of emergency ambulance services in Sri Lanka.
4. MoU was renewed regarding India’s grant assistance for implementation of SDP.

Malcolm Turnbull becomes the Prime Minister of Australia

Malcolm Turnbull becomes the 29th Prime Minister of Australia. He has won the election with 44 votes out of 54 consequently defeating the former Prime Minister Tony Abott. On 15th September 2015, Mr. Turnbull on his first Question Time session in parliament, Mr Turnbull paid tribute to Mr Abbott, and said these are “the most exciting times to be an Australian.
