New Zealand wins 2015 Rugby World Cup

New Zealand become world champions for a record 3rd time and the first nation to retain the Webb Ellis Cup. They cemented their status as the greatest team in rugby history when they overwhelmed Australia 34-17 at Twickenham on October 31. Tries from Nehe Milner-Skudder and Ma’a Nonu had the All Blacks (New Zealand) cruising 21-3 early in the second half before Ben Smith’s yellow card opened the door for Australia, who got back to within four points with tries by David Pocock and Tuvita Kuridrani.

The sport’s superpower won the cup for a second time four years ago, also on home soil, and Saturday’s victory was their first overseas. New Zealand looked on their game from the start, zipping the ball sharply along the lines and creating quick ball at every ruck to keep the Wallabies on the back foot.

Carter finished the highest-scoring World Cup final with 19 points, and finally played a full part in an All Blacks’ World Cup win after getting injured during the team’s 2011 title campaign. Since winning the 2011 final, New Zealand have won 49 of 54 games under coach Steve Hansen – losing only three of them – to enhance the legacy of one of the greatest teams in sports.
