APPOINTMENTS

Ashok Kumar Mehta appointed PS to President

Senior revenue officer Ashok Kumar Mehta has been appointed as Private Secretary to President Pranab Mukherjee. Mehta, a 1987 batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, is working as Commissioner in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, as per his service records. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Mehta as PS to the President, an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training said.

10 new EDs appointed in public sector banks

As many as 10 new Executive Directors (EDs) were today appointed to various public sector banks. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Department of Financial Services for appointment of 10 General Managers (GMs) as Executive Directors in the banks.

Deposits in Jan Dhan accounts cross Rs 30,000 Crore

Deposits in accounts opened under the government’s flagship financial inclusion programme — Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) — have crossed the Rs 30,000 crore mark. As many as 20.38 crore bank accounts were opened under the PMJDY as on the January 20, as per the latest data available. These bank accounts had deposits of Rs 30,638.29 crore. The accounts that can be opened under PMJDY are Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts (BSBDA) which can be of zero balance, as per RBI guidelines.

RBI to issue Rs 500, Rs 100 notes with more security

Reserve Bank will soon put into circulation new banknotes of Rs 500 and Rs 100 denominations of the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005 with enhanced security features. The introduction of new bank notes is part of its endeavour to continually improve design and security features to deter counterfeiting activities.

The Reserve Bank will shortly issue Rs 500 denomination bank notes with three additional/revised features in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005, with inset letter ‘E’ in both the numbering panels, bearing the signature of Dr Raghuram G Rajan, Governor, RBI. RBI said these notes will have ascending size of numerals in the number panels, bleed lines, and enlarged identification mark, on the obverse.

Haryana signs 8 MoUs in China on smart-cities etc

Haryana is expecting a spike in foreign investments from China after eight MoUs were signed with top companies to set up a USD 10 billion industrial park and smart cities in the state during Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s trip to woo investors. These MoUs were signed with top Chinese companies like Wanda Group, China Land Development Company Private Limited, and ZTE Corporation. The MoUs were signed during the Investment Roadshow organised here, attended by representatives of more than 100 top notch Chinese companies.

MSDE and DoT sign MoU for national action plan for skill development in telecom sector

Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Department of Telecommunication (DoT), a department under Ministry of Communications & IT, to develop and implement National Action Plan for skill development in telecom sector. The common objective is to utilise PSUs under DoT to fulfill skilled manpower requirement of the telecom sector and at the same time providing quality opportunities for employment / entrepreneurship. For the successful implementation of the MoU, MSDE has primarily discharged responsibilities through Directorate General of Training (DGT), National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and related Sector Skill Councils (SSCs).

India and Oman conduct bilateral naval exercise ‘Naseem Al Bahr’

India and Oman will conduct 10th edition of bilateral maritime exercise ‘Naseem Al Bahr’ in the Arabian Sea from January 22 to January 27, 2016. Two Oman Navy ships RNOV Al-Shamikh and RNOV Al-Seeb, which will also participate in IFR 2016, entered the port of Goa on January 22. These ships are on their way to participate in the International Fleet Review scheduled at Visakhapatnam scheduled from February 4 to February 9, 2016.

India’s first High Speed Public Wi – Fi Service at Mumbai Central station

Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Minister of Railways, Govt of India, inaugurated the Wi – Fi service in a function at Mumbai Central Railway station. This is a part of an ambitious project towards Digital India initiative by Indian Railways with the help of RailTel Corporation in collaboration with Google. After the inauguration of Wi – Fi service, Mumbai Central station has gained the distinguished status of being the first ever station in India to have high – speed internet facility for its thousands of passengers who travel everyday by trains.

India submitted its first Biennial Update Report to UNFCCC

India submitted its first Biennial Update Report (BUR) on January 22, to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to fulfill the reporting obligation under the Convention. As per the provisions of the Convention, countries need to periodically provide information in the form of their National Communication. BUR contains national GHG inventory of India for the year 2010, prepared in accordance with the guidelines of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The inventory covers six greenhouse gases and five categories.

Sri Lanka tops South Asia in HDI

Sri Lanka topped the Human Development Index(HDI) 2015 in South Asian Region. But the country’s performance in terms of average annual human development index (HDI) growth rate during 1990-2014 was lower than many other South Asian countries. This is the highlights of the Global Human Development Report (HDR) 2015 released by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) here on January 21. Sri Lanka has been placed at the 73rd rank with an HDI value of 0.757. In the previous year’s report, it occupied the 74th place. Since the end of the civil war in 2009, the country’s rank went up by five.

OBITUARY

Tabla maestro Shankar Ghosh dies at 80

Legendary tabla player Shankar Ghosh(80), died on January 22 due to pneumonia, cardiac problems and old age complications. He had undergone an angioplasty following heart complications in mid December at the Medica Superspecialty Hospital. He was on ventilator since Wednesday. He breathed his last 9 p.m. on January 22. Known for his innovative genius, he revolutionised both the art of tabla solo performances as well as tabla accompaniment. He is the creator of the much acclaimed all-drum orchestra Music of the Drums – later called the Calcutta Drum Orchestra.
