India-born Sundar Pichai is Google’s new CEO

Tamil Nadu born Sundar Pichai has been named as the CEO of Google. He has been with Google for 11 years. Mr. Pichai started at Google in 2004, where he was known as a “low-key manager” who worked on the Google toolbar and then led the launch of the market-beating Chrome browser in 2008. He was born and grew up in Chennai, studied engineering at IIT-Kharagpur, then came to Stanford in the US, and went on to complete an MBA from Wharton School of Business.

In 2014, Pichai became Google’s product chief, overseeing virtually all Google software products not named YouTube. He runs Google+, Google Wallet, Android Pay and Google’s Apps services for businesses.

In a massive corporate restructuring, Google has become a subsidiary of Alphabet, a new company run by Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Page said Pichai was the natural choice to lead Google. Pichai has been running Google’s products. Now he will add YouTube to his responsibilities, with YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki reporting to him.
