Dipa Karmakar becomes India’s first ‘World Class Gymnast

Indian Gymnast Dipa Karmakar has scripted history by becoming the first Indian to be named as ‘World Class Gymnast’ by the Federation International de Gymnastique (FIG). she is also the first ever Indian female gymnast to qualify for the Olympic Games. Understandably, this has garnered interest in many budding athletes and as a result we might just see a rise in children attempting to give Gymnastics a shot!   • The confirmation for the ‘World Class Gymnast’ was confirmed in a letter from Secretary General “Andre Gueisbuhler” to the Gymnastics Federation of India.
  • She is only 22 years old and has already created a history by winning bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
  • She also won a bronze at the Asian Gymnastics Championships and She ranked 5th at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
  • Since 1947, there were only 11 Indian male gymnasts who have taken part in Olympics . However, this is the first time that a woman gymnast has qualified for the summer games.
  • Dipa Karmakar was born on 9 August 1993in Tirpura (Agartala) .she is a daughter of a weightlifting coach at the SAI centre in Agartala.
