1. International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

March 21 is marked as International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This day holds great significance as it marks the tragedy that took place in Sharpeville, South Africa, on March 21, 1960.

During a peaceful protest against apartheid “pass laws,” police opened fire and killed 69 people. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the Day in 1966, urging the international community to work towards eradicating all forms of racial discrimination.

The International Decade for People of African Descent

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is also an opportunity to draw attention to the International Decade for People of African Descent. This group includes some of the world’s poorest and most marginalized people.

2. Sangita Kalanidhi Award to be presented to Bombay Jayashri

The eminent personality of the Music Industry, Bombay Jayashri secures her position for the Sangita Kalanidhi Award for 2023. She has been chosen by the Madras Music Academy.

At the 97th Annual Conference and Concerts, she along with other deserving artists will be honoured with various awards. This event will be conducted from December 15, 2023, to January 1, 2024.

This 59-year-old musician and vocalist of Carnatic Music, Jayashri Ramnath has sung multiple songs in different languages. She has also performed worldwide in collaboration with some renowned singers.

Sangita Kalanidhi Award

Sangeetha Kalanidhi or Sangeeta Kalanidhi or Sangita Kalanidhi is the title awarded yearly to a Carnatic musician by the Madras Music Academy.

The idea of the award was conceived in 1942 by the then Academy President KV Krishnaswami Iyer; and on 1 January 1943, all musicians who had presided over the annual conferences between 1929 and 1942 were awarded the title.

3. Kerala has its First Trans Lawyer Padma Lakshmi

  • Padma Lakshmi becomes the first ever Transgender in Kerala who has obtained the position of lawyer and got her name in the Bar Council.
  • The Law Minister of Kerala, P. Rajeev posted on social media and congratulated her to be designated as a lawyer and encouraged more transgender people to acquire the role.
  • This is a great step for the whole Transgender community as it will help them to stand for their rights more firmly in future.

4. Sports Stadium named after Rani Rampal

Rani Rampal becomes the first ever woman to have a stadium named after her. She is a famous player in the Women’s Hockey Team. This stadium is in Rae Bareli. Moreover, she is the youngest one in her team to participate in the World Cup of the year 2010.

According to the reports, the Modern Coach Factory (MCF) Rae Bareli has given a new name to the hockey stadium which is ‘Rani’s Girls Hockey Turf’.

She has played 212 international matches and scored 134 goals. She is currently the Captain for Indian Women’s Hockey Team.

5. World Down Syndrome Day: 21 March

March 21 is observed as World Down Syndrome Day worldwide, aiming to increase public awareness and show support for individuals living with this genetic condition.

The United Nations chose this date to highlight the link between Down syndrome and the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which makes it unique. The day serves as an opportunity to educate and raise awareness about Down syndrome.

6. International Nowruz Day 2023: 21 March 2023

21 March 2023 is celebrated as International Nowruz Day 2023. Every year on March 21, the International Nowruz Day is a much-anticipated global New Year’s festival that marks the spring equinox, ushering in the season of rebirth and nature’s renewal.

Almost 300 million people worldwide commemorate the international holiday that the United Nations proclaimed on March 21, also known as “Nauryz,” “Navruz,” or “Nowrouz,” which is translated as “new day” and has a history of at least 3,000 years.

9. Indian Industrialist Shri Ratan Tata appointed in ‘Order of Australia’ for distinguished service

Ratan Tata, an Indian industrialist and philanthropist, has been named an Honorary Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AO) for his outstanding contributions to the Australia-India bilateral relationship, specifically in the areas of trade, investment, and philanthropy.

The announcement was made by Australia’s Governor-General, following a recommendation by Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Barry O’Farrell.

Ratan Tata, who is the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons and a former Chairman of the Tata Group, is recognized as one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs worldwide, with a net worth exceeding $1 billion as of 2022.

10. Anup Bagchi, MD & CEO, ICICI Prudential Life

The current MD & CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, N S Kannan, is set to retire from his position in June 2023 upon completion of his term. His successor, Anup Bagchi, who is an Executive Director at ICICI Bank, will take over as the MD & CEO for a five-year term from June 19, 2023.
