1. International Translation Day is observed on 30 September

International Translation Day observed in bringing nations together, contributing to the development and strengthening world peace and security. This day provides a great opportunity to spotlight the important work of translators, interpreters and others in the language service industry.

Theme

The theme of International Translation Day 2019 is “Translation and Indigenous Languages”.

2. RBI appoints Jai Bhagwan Bhoria as new administrator for PMC Bank

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) superseded the Board of crisis-hit Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank Ltd. She is appointed Jai Bhagwan Bhoria as the administrator of the bank.

The RBI increased the amount of withdrawal allowed to the depositors from 1,000 to 10,000. The directives of RBI shall remain in force for a period of six months.

3. Justice Rajendra Menon recommended as next Chairman of Armed Forces Tribunal

A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi has recommended former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajendra Menon as the next chairman of Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT). The other members of bench included Justices SA Bobde and S Abdul Nazeer.

4. Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Bhadauria takes charge as IAF Chief

Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria took charge as the new Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF). He is now the 26th Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force. He succeeds outgoing Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa, who retired after 41 years of service in IAF on 30 September 2019.

5. India lift SAFF U-18 Championship title for first time

India won the SAFF Under-18 football Championship by defeating Bangladesh by 2-1 in final held in Kathmandu, Nepal. This is India’s maiden SAFF U-18 trophy. In 2015 football tournament India remained runners up and in 2017 India finished 3rd.

6. Scientist Thanu Padmanabhan gets MP Birla Memorial Award

The 62 year old Physicist and Cosmologist Thanu Padmanabhan was conferred the prestigious M P Birla Memorial Award 2019 for his contributions to the world of cosmology.

He received the award at a programme held at M P Birla Planetarium in Kolkata. The planetarium is currently in its 54th year and had played a pioneering role by initiating an Astronomy Awareness Programme in 1965.

7. Minor Planet named after Pandit Jasraj

The IAU – International Astronomical Union has named a minor planet between Mars and Jupiter after an Indian classical singer Pandit Jasraj. He is the first Indian musician to receive this honor. The planet was discovered on November 11, 2006. The minor planets discovered are given permanent numbers by the IAU.

8. K. Siva Reddy awarded Saraswati Samman

K Siva Reddy is a Telugu poet. He was awarded the Saraswati Samman award for his collection Pakkaki Ottigilite in 2018.

About Saraswati Samman

The award is considered as the highest recognition in the field of Indian literature. It carries a cash prize of Rs 15 lakhs.

9. Suresh Chitturi appointed Chief of International Egg Commission

Suresh Chitturi, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of India’s leading poultry firm Srinivasa Farms, has been appointed as chairman of the International Egg Commission (IEC). The Srinivasa Farms is recognised as one of the builders of the Indian Poultry industry in the last 50 years.

10. Bathukamma-2019: The Telangana Flower Festival begins

Bathukamma, the flower festival of Telangana, is being celebrated in state’s Warangal district. The nine-day long festival of flowers will be celebrated from 29 September to 6 October 2019. Bathukamma marks the beginning of Sharath Ruthu and it is widely celebrated by young girls and women.

About Bathukamma

The ‘Bathukammas’ are basically the cone shaped flower stack, at street corners and temples in the city. Women and young girls dances around these Bathukammas to shower their offerings. These Bathukammas’ are then later immerse in water.

11. Indian Junior Boys Win Bronze Medal in Serbia Table Tennis Open

Indian junior boys Raegan Albuquerque and Yashansh Malik paired with Netherlands’ Lode Hulshof to win the bronze medal at the Serbia Junior and Cadet Table-Tennis Open. The team put up a big fight before going down 2-3 in the semi-finals to the Czech Republic trio of Radek Skala, Tomas Martinko and Ondrej Kveton.

12. Saudi Arabia to invest $100 billion in India

Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, is looking at investing $100 billion in India in areas of petrochemicals, infrastructure and mining among others, considering the country’s growth potential.

13. Week-Long IPCC Meet on Climate Change begins in New Delhi

India is hosting the Second Lead Author Meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group III Sixth Assessment Report at New Delhi, beginning 30th September to 4th October 2019.

14. Veteran actor Viju Khote dies at 77

Film and theatre actor Viju Khote passed away at the age of 77 in Mumbai. The actor, who is popular for playing the role of Kalia in Sholay, has appeared in over 300 Hindi and Marathi films and numerous television shows and plays.

The actor made his big screen debut with the 1964 film Ya Malak and went on to do some of the most iconic characters in Bollywood. His popular films include Sholay, Andaz Apna Apna, Qurbani, Karz, Nagina and China Gate, among others.
