  1. HSBC Names Retail Head John Flint as Next Chief Executive

HSBC (HSBA.L) has chosen John Flint as its next chief executive, with its newly arrived chairman promoting an insider to drive revenue growth at Europe’s biggest bank.

Flint, who runs HSBC’s retail and wealth management business out of London, will take over as CEO in February next year when Stuart Gulliver, 58, retires after seven years in the job.

  1. South Delhi launches city’s first ”pink toilet” for women

To mark the International Day of the Girl Child, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) will inaugurate the ‘pink toilets’ for women with exclusive facilities.

The first-of-its-kind model will have vending machines for sanitary napkins, incinerator facilities and feeding area for breastfeeding mothers. The first of the pink toilets will be inaugurated at PVR Vikaspuri.

  1. Bihar Cabinet approves govt job reservation for ‘Divyangs’

The Bihar government on Tuesday approved reservations for persons with disabilities in government jobs and educational institutions.

The cabinet gave its approval during a meeting presided by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The cabinet also approved establishment of a state advisory board for the empowerment of ‘Divyangjan’ as envisaged in the Act

  1. India to sign pact with Japan for setting up flexible LNG market

The Cabinet gave its nod to signing a host of MoUs including one Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with Japan for liquefied natural gas that would enable establishing a liquid, flexible and global LNG market.

The MoC provides a framework to cooperate in facilitating flexibility in LNG contracts, abolition of destination clause and in exploring possibilities of cooperation in establishing reliable spot price indices reflecting true LNG demand and supply.

  1. Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines launch joint air patrols

Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines have begun coordinated air patrols to intensify their fight against Islamic militants who have laid siege to a southern Philippine city.

The start of the air patrols comes four months after the three countries launched joint maritime patrols to prevent Islamic State group-aligned militants in the southern Philippines from fleeing to neighbouring nations.

  1. UK’s Oxford plans to have world’s first zero-emissions zone

Petrol and diesel vehicles could be banned from Oxford city centre by 2035 under plans to bring in what officials believe would be the world’s first ‘zero emissions zone’.

The proposals aim to slash air pollution in the historic university city, which has seen levels of harmful pollutant nitrogen dioxide plateau above legal limits in some areas.

Under the plans, which are being put out for consultation on Monday, the ban would be brought in in phases, starting with preventing non-zero emissions taxis, cars, light commercial vehicles and buses on a small number of streets in 2020.

  1. SpaceX successfully launches Falcon 9 rocket, 2nd in a week

SpaceX successfully launched a Falcon 9, its 15th rocket launch of this year. The rocket took off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying a satellite with a dual-purpose mission for both EchoStar and SES. The rocket used on this flight included a first stage that was previously flown for a Space Station resupply mission in February, and then recovered and refurbished by SpaceX.

  1. Gurusaidutt Wins Bulgarian International Tournament

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist RMV Gurusaidutt on Sunday clinched the men’s singles title at the Bulgarian International Future Series tournament.

Gurusaidutt, who played in a tournament in May after returning from an injury suffered during the US Open in July last year, defeated Muhammed Ali Kurt 21-17 21-16 in a 35- minute match to boost his confidence ahead of next month’s Senior Nationals Championship.

  1. Indian Pacer Ashish Nehra has Announced Retirement

Veteran Indian pacer Ashish Nehra has announced that he will retire from international cricket after the opening T20 against New Zealand at his home ground of Delhi on November 1, ending a prolific but injury-plagued career.

He is best remembered for his 6 for 23 against England at Durban in the 2003 World Cup, a match he played despite being unwell and frequently throwing up in between his overs.

  1. National Award for Boxing Coach Sandhu & Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak

Long-serving Indian boxing coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu has been honoured with the National Awards for senior citizens by President Ramnath Kovind.

Sandhu, who has the distinction of coaching both the men and women boxers, was bestowed the honour at a function in New Delhi.

  1. Yuvraj named Laureus foundation’s first Indian ambassador

Yuvraj Singh becomes Laureus’ first Indian ambassador and joins a host of cricket legends in the Laureus Family, including Indian Academy Members Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Kapil Dev.   –  R.V. Moorthy

Yuvraj Singh played a bit of football and a bit of netball at the Cooperage football ground on Wednesday with trainees of NGOs Slum Soccer and Naz Foundation. Soon after, Mercedes-Benz and Laureus Sport For Good named him as their first brand ambassador in India.
