  1. Ramesh Narayan elected President, IAA India chapter

Veteran adman Ramesh Narayan has been unanimously elected President of the India Chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA) at its AGM held on September 28 in Mumbai.

Narayan, who founded Canco Advertising, was inducted into the IAA Hall of Fame in 2014 and was also conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) in 2014.

  1. Green nod to Karnataka’s Rs 1,561 cr Harohalli industrial park

The Centre has given its green light to the combined development of Harohalli industrial zone in Ramnagara district of Karnataka entailing an investment of Rs 1,561 crore, a government official said.

The Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB)’s proposal is to build a multi-product industrial park in about 904.86 hectares.

  1. India, EU to Hold 14th Summit Talks in New Delhi

India and the European Union will hold their 14th summit talks on October 6 during which both sides are expected to discuss a host of key issues including ways to remove hurdles for the long pending free trade agreement.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MAE) said the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, and the president of the European Commission, Jean—Claude Juncker, will be here on a working visit from October 5—7 for the summit.

  1. India to get its first US oil

India will receive its first ever shipment of US crude oil when a very large crude carrier (VLCC) docks at Paradip port in Odisha.

Indian Oil Corp (IOC) in early July booked the first US cargo, opening floodgates that saw other state-owned refiners including Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) rush to buy US crude oil.

  1. Burqa Ban Comes into Effect in Austria

Austria’s controversial ban on the wearing of Islamic face veils in public places came into effect. Those found in breach of the ‘Anti-Face-Veiling Act’ will be subject to fines of €150.

The country approved the ban on face veils back in May as part of a wider ‘integration law’ which, according to officials, is aimed at encouraging people to assimilate into Austrian culture.

  1. Greece joint air force drills with Cyprus, Egypt, Israel

Greece’s defense minister says plans are being drawn up for joint air force drills with Cyprus, Israel, Egypt and other European countries as part of efforts to bolster stability in the eastern Mediterranean.

Panos Kammenos’ remarks came after a military parade in the Cypriot capital to commemorate the 57th anniversary of the ethnically divided island’s independence.

  1. China celebrates 68th national day

China on Sunday celebrated its 68th national day, with over 1,15,000 citizens gathering at the Tiananmen Square in the heart of Beijing to take part in celebrations.

The national day is celebrated with a week-long holiday, while the Chinese traditional Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Cake Festival, featuring family gathering, falls on October 4 this year.

On December 14, 1990, the UN General Assembly made October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons, following up on initiatives such as the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing, which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the assembly.

  1. Max Verstappen wins Malaysian Gran Prix

A commanding drive from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen saw him soundly beat three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton to win Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang Circuit.

Verstappen grabbed the lead from then race leader Hamilton on lap 4. By lap 25, The Red Bull driver had a commanding lead – more than 9 seconds ahead of the Briton and continued to lead the grid throughout the race.

  1. Russia, China banned from weightlifting for one year

Russia leads the list of seven post-Soviet states suspended from weightlifting competitions for up to 12 months alongside China and Turkey.

The step was taken by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) following the retesting of samples from Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
