1. International Day of the Worlds Indigenous Peoples August

United Nations observes 9th August every year as International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The day is celebrated to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups. This year’s observance is dedicated to Indigenous Peoples’ Languages in view of 2019 being marked as the International Year of Indigenous Languages.

2. Serena Williams Tops Forbes List Of Highest Paid Sports Women

US tennis superstar Serena Williams topped Forbes magazine’s list of the highest-paid women in sports for the fourth straight year. The business publication calculated that the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion earned $29.2 million in the 12-month period.

3. Indian Bank and Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance ink pact

Public sector Indian Bank inked a pact with private sector insurer Aditya Birla Sun Life to offer life insurance products to the bank’s customers. The partnership would see around 2,900 branches of the bank offering a diverse range of life insurance policies to its customers.

4. Shah Rukh Khan awarded Excellence in Cinema award at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne

Indian Bollywood Superstar Shah Rukh Khan was felicitated with ‘Excellence in Cinema’ honour at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2019. He was felicitated at iconic Palais Theatre in Melbourne, which is one of city’s heritage landmarks.

5. AndhaDhun’ wins National Award for Best Hindi Film

Ayushmann Khurrana starrer ‘AndhaDhun’ won the 66th National Award for Best Hindi film, the jury announced. The film, which also starred Tabu and Radhika Apte, is a crime thriller directed by Sriram Raghavan. The announcement of the National Film Awards was delayed this year due to the Lok Sabha polls.

6. Ayushmann Khurrana, Vicky Kaushal share National Award for Best Actor

Ayushmann Khurrana and Vicky Kaushal won the National Award for Best Actor for ‘AndhaDhun’ and ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’ respectively. While Ayushmann played the role of a pianist pretending to be visually-impaired in ‘AndhaDhun’, Vicky portrayed an Army Officer in ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’. The award for Best Actress went to Keerthy Suresh for Telugu film ‘Mahanati’.

7. Jana Small Finance Bank receives Scheduled Bank status from RBI

Jana Small Finance Bank Ltd announced  it has got the status of a Scheduled Bank from RBI. The Bengaluru-headquartered bank, established as a financial services company in 2009, said it presently operates 260 branches and 338 asset centres serving over 5.5 million customers in different states.

The bank’s aim has always been to provide financial inclusion to the underserved sections of the society, including small business units, small and marginal farmers, micro and small industries, its MD & CEO, Ajay Kanwal said.

8. Lenovo names Ashok Nair as Director for India Service Operations

Ashok, an alumnus from XLRI, Jamshedpur, comes with over two decades of experience in increasing brand presence for consumer-focused businesses in India and South Asia, across IT businesses like Intel as well as new-age businesses in ed-tech. His previous stint was as an entrepreneur where he was the co-founder at Math Adventures, an ed-tech focused startup. He joins Lenovo after a successful exit.

9. PV Sindhu Only Indian Featured On The Forbes List Of Highest-Paid Female Athletes

Forbes just dropped its list of the world’s highest paid female athletes. And these ladies are not just ruling their respective sport but also raking in the moolah with their every victory. Amongst them, are the likes of Serena Williams and Venus Williams, Naomi Osaka and our very own PV Sindhu.

The 24-year-old star athlete, who in 2018 became the first Indian to win the BWF World Tour finals, has several endorsements in the bag, which include Bridgestone, JBL, Gatorade, Panasonic and others. Combining her $5 million in endorsements with her $500,000 (INR 35,494,000) of prize money, Sindhu’s net earnings are a cool $5.5 million (INR 39,07,75,000)!

10. Hashim Amla retires from international cricket

South Africa batsman Hashim Amla has retired from all forms of international cricket with immediate effect, bringing down the curtains on a stellar 15-year career that he termed an “incredible ride”.

“Firstly, all glory and thanks to the Almighty for granting me this Proteus journey which has been nothing but a joy and privilege,” Amla said in a statement. “I learnt many lessons during this incredible ride, made many friends and most importantly shared in the love of a brotherhood called Protea Fire.
