1. IIT Bombay ranks 45th in QS World University Rankings 2024.

IIT Bombay ranks 45th globally in engineering, and tops in South Asia in QS World University Rankings 2024.

The institute has been ranked:

2. International Day of Human Space Flight: 12th April

  • The UN General Assembly, in its resolution of 7 April 2011, declared 12 April as the International Day of Human Space Flight.
  • On 4 October 1957 the 1st human-made Earth satellite Sputnik I was launched into outer space, thus opening the way for space exploration.
  • On 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the 1st human to orbit the Earth, opening a new chapter of human endeavor in outer space.

3. Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2024: India ranks third with 67 unicorns.

  • According to the Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2024, India has become the first country in the world to see a decrease in the number of unicorns created since 2017.
  • The number of unicorns in India in 2023 was 67, which is one fewer than the number of such firms that existed in 2022.
  • The United States of America, is second, with 703 unicorns
  • China comes in third with 340 unicorns.
  • The United Kingdom and the European Union came in at number four and number five, respectively, on the list.
  • The aggregate value of all of the world’s unicorns has reached five trillion dollars today.

4. India Emerges as Fourth-Largest Exporter of Digitally Delivered Services: WTO Report

According to a report on Global Trade Outlook and Statistics that was published by the World Trade Organization (WTO), India has now risen to the position of being the fourth largest exporter of services that are delivered digitally.

More than a quarter of the country’s share of international trade in services has significantly expanded in recent years. India’s exports of digitally provided services were predicted to reach $257 billion in 2023, representing a 17% increase from the previous year’s total.

India has surpassed Germany in the rankings as a result of this increase; nonetheless, it is still less advanced than the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Ireland put together.

Over the last twenty years, there has been a substantial rise in the number of services that are given digitally. These services include professional services in the fields of education, gaming, and streaming music and films.

5. World Parkinson’s Day 2024 is observed on April 11

The eleventh of April is designated as World Parkinson’s Day, which is celebrated yearly to bring attention to Parkinson’s disease, a neurological condition that impacts millions of people all over the world.

The obstacles that people living with Parkinson’s disease, as well as their caregivers and family, endure are brought to light on this day, which serves as a reminder of those challenges.

About the Origins of the World Parkinson’s Day

The date was selected to commemorate the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson, a British physician who was the first to describe the symptoms of the disease in his seminal essay, “An Essay on the Shaking Palsy,” which was published in 1817.

On this day, Dr. Parkinson’s achievements are recognized and celebrated because his work was crucial in laying the groundwork for our current understanding of Parkinson’s disease.

6. Former New Zealand Legspinner Jack Alabaster Passes Away at 93

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) took to social media to announce the demise of former legspinner Jack Alabaster, who passed away. night at the age of 93 in Cromwell, United Kingdom.

NZC expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Alabaster as a “champion of Southland and @OtagoCricket” who played 21 Tests for New Zealand from 1955 to 1972, taking 49 wickets at an average of 38.02.

Alabaster’s Cricketing Career

Alabaster is considered one of the best spinners to have represented New Zealand. During his 17-year international career, he was part of the team that achieved the country’s first four Test victories. Alabaster made 143 first-class appearances for Otago, claiming 500 wickets.

He toured several countries with the New Zealand team, including India and Pakistan in 1955-56, England in 1958, South Africa in 1961-62, and the West Indies in 1971-72. His standout performance came against South Africa, where he claimed 22 wickets in five Tests, helping New Zealand draw their first series against the Proteas.

7. UK’s First Woman High Commissioner to India: Lindy Cameron

As the first woman to hold the position of high commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron, a notable graduate of Oxford University and a former chief executive officer of the National Cyber Security Centre in the United Kingdom, has been appointed.

It is seventy years since India appointed its first high commissioner to London, and her nomination represents an important milestone in the history of relations between the United Kingdom and India.

8. Sushil Sharma Appointed CMD of SJVN Limited

Sushil Sharma has been recommended for the role of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of SJVN Limited by the panel that is part of the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB).

This decision was reached during the meeting that took place on April 8th of this year.

From a pool of nine candidates who were interviewed by the PESB selection panel, Sharma emerged as the frontrunner. Sharma is now functioning as Director (Projects) inside the business.

  • Sharma began his career with SJVN in 1994 as an Assistant Engineer.
  • Since then, he has consistently attained higher positions within the company, demonstrating his skill in hydropower projects.
  • Sharma has over thirty years of experience, including important contributions to projects like as the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Project and the 412 MW Rampur HPS.
  • He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from VNIT, Nagpur, and is well-positioned to lead SJVN into the next phase of its expansion.
