Srinivasan K Swamy to get AAAI Lifetime Achievement Award

The Advertising Club, Madras, has in its diamond jubilee year, conferred the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) to Srinivasan K Swamy, Chairman and Managing Director, RK SWAMY BBDO.

  • This award is the highest honour to be given to an individual in India for outstanding contribution in the advertising industry.
  • Swamy is the sixth recipient of this award in the last 22 years, with RK Swamy being the first recipient of the award in 1994

Sanjay Gupta appointed Konkan Railway CMD

Sanjay Gupta, who had been officiating as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRCL), has been appointed as the CMD of the corporation. He is the youngest ever CMD of KRCL. Prior to his elevation, he was working as Director (Operating and Commercial) of KRCL. Ex-Indian Railway Services of Mechanical Engineering (IRSME), Gupta has worked on several prestigious and coveted posts as well as on various assignments over the Railways and has more than 30 years of experience as a Mechanical Officer of Indian Railways.

COO of Microsoft Kelvin Turner has resigned, to join Citadel Securities

Kevin Turner’s 11-year stint as Microsoft’s Chief Operating Officer (CEO) is about to come to an end. He was handling Microsoft’s enormous sales operations.Kevin. He would now be joining Citadel Securities as Chief Executive Officer. Prior to Microsoft, Turner spent nearly 20 years at Wal-Mart Stores, where he rose through the ranks and was the youngest corporate officer ever at age 29.

TCS Non-Executive Director Phiroz Vandrevala steps down

Indian IT bellwether Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) stated that Phiroz Vandrevala has relinquished office of Non-Executive Director of the company, due to personal reasons, with effect from July 8, 2016. He had been a director on the TCS board since September 2007. Vandrevala, also the Vice-Chairman and MD of Diligenta, a TCS subsidiary, will continue with this role.

Radhika Menon : First woman to receive Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea

Five years ago Captain Radhika Menon, Master of oil products tanker Sampurna Swarajya, became the first woman to become the captain of Indian Merchant Navy in 2011. This year, she becomes the first woman in the world to receive International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea for saving the lives of 7 fishermen from a sinking fishing boat in the tumultuous sea.

SIDBI partners Yes Bank for loan guarantee under WB scheme

A memorandum of understanding (MOU)was signed between SIDBI and YES BANK under the partial risk sharing facility (PRSF) for financing energy efficiency projects programme sponsored by the World Bank. As per the terms of the agreement, Sidbi will guarantee 75% of loans of up to Rs 15 crore extended to the energy efficiency projects.

Uma Bharti hopeful of Ganga becoming clean by 2018

With the government formally launching the ‘Namami Gange’ project from Haridwar in Uttarakhand. To clean the Ganga throughout its route from Gangotri in Uttarakhand to Ganga Sagar in West Bengal, the government launched 231 projects at an estimated cost of Rs 1,500 crore. Strict monitoring would be maintained to ensure that untreated water is not discharged into the Ganga.

Ansari to inaugurate new building of state UPSIC in Lucknow

Vice- President Hamid Ansari would inaugurate the new building of Uttar Pradesh State Information Commission (UPSIC) in Gomtinagar area of the state capital. The programme was scheduled on July 8 but was postponed to July 11 following the festival of Eid.

  • State Governor Ram Naik, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav along with several state ministers and other digniteries would also be present at the function.
  • The new building was constructed at a cost of Rs 25 crore. The Commission had already been shifted on April 11.

UP to plant 5 cr saplings tom to create Guinness world record

Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his parliamentarian wife Dimple Yadav will take active part in the mega plantation drive, under which the state government plans to plant 5 crore saplings across the state  to set a Guinness World Record. The initiative gives boost to the UP government’s ‘Clean UP, Green UP’ Mission.

DRDO inks pact with IITs for Centre for Propulsion Technology

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with IIT-Bombay and Madras to establish a bi-nodal ‘Centre of Propulsion Technology’ (CoPT) at the two institutions. The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed among DG DRDO S Christopher, IIT Bombay Director Prof Devang Khakhar and IIT Madras Director Prof B Ramamurthi.

Kerala Government imposes 14.5 % fat tax on Junk Food

As a measure to tackle the increasing rate of obesity, Kerala is all set to introduce the first ever ‘fat tax’ to be levied on junk and fast food items. In his budget speech, Kerala’s Minister of Finance Dr. T.M. Thomas Issac proposed a tax of 14.5% on junk food including items like burgers, pizzas, sandwiches, doughnuts, tacos, etcetera.

Government plans to clean 10 iconic places under Swachh Bharat Mission

The Union Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation Narendra Singh Tomar has stated that government will carry out a drive to clean 10 iconic places in the country as part of a pilot project under the Swachh Bharat mission. Mr. Tomar said his ministry was in the process of selecting 10 iconic places for cleaning under the mission and most would be either tourist or religious spots.

PM Narendra Modi In Tanzania

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tanzania from South Africa on the third leg of his four-nation tour of Africa where he held bilateral discussions with Tanzanian President -John Magufuli in Dar-es-Salaam. The Prime Minister was accorded a ceremonial welcome, the East African way when he arrived at the State House in dar-es-Salaam.

Bilateral Meeting between India and UK on business

Commerce and Industry Minister, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, UK, in New Delhi.

  • UK is India’s 12th largest trading partner and bilateral trade between the two sides contracted by 2.2% to $14 billion in 2015-16.
  • UK is the third largest investor in India with $23 billion in investment between April 2000 and March 2016.

ISIS Terrorists in India:Bangladesh releases images of 10 suspected Terrorists

Bangladesh has released photos of ten suspected terrorists and has shared the photos with the Indian government.It is believed that ten terror suspects might have sneaked into the Indian territory from Bangladesh. Since the Bangladesh attack on July 1, 2016, the Indian agencies are on high alert, especially in border areas.Security agencies have asked the citizen to be alert and report if any of these militants are located in Bengal or Assam.

India and South Africa sign MoUs in four areas of co-operation

India and South Africa announced Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and Programme in four areas of bilateral cooperation. The MoUs are in the area of Information and Communication technology, Tourism, Grass root innovation and ‘art and culture’. The MoUs have been signed after a delegation-level talks headed by Prime Minister Narendara Modi and South African President Jacob Zuma in Pretoria, South Africa.

India gives SUVs to Mozambique, completes delivery of $4.5 mn grant

Occurring with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mozambique, India has handed over 30 Mahindra SUVs to Mozambique, completing the delivery of Dollars 4.5 million grant assistance. The vehicles were handed over by Amar Sinha, Secretary (Economic Relations) in the External Affairs Ministry, to an official of Mozambique’s Interior Ministry.

Nirmala Sitharaman to lead business delegation to Russia

The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Commerce & Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman to lead the delegation of over 110 Indian companies which showcase India’s engineering prowess at the Russian engineering and technology event under the Brand India Engineering campaign.

Speaking on this occasion, Smt. Sitharaman said, “Historically, Russia and India have enjoyed long-standing cultural and strategic ties. Serena Williams and Andy Murray win Wimbledon 2016

Andy Murray threw his racket into the crowd and punched the air in delight after demolishing Milos Raonic to secure his second Wimbledon title. Britain’s Andy Murray became Wimbledon champion for the second time with a superb performance against Canadian sixth seed Milos Raonic 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 on Centre Court in the final. Murray is the first British man to win multiple Wimbledon singles titles since Fred Perry in 1935.

OBITUARY

Pakistani philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi has passed away

Edhi Foundation Chairman , Pakistani philanthropist, social activist, ascetic and humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi passed away at the age of 92 in Karachi due to kidney failure. He was the founder and head of the Edhi Foundation in Pakistan and known as Angel of Mercy, Pakistan’s ‘Father Teresa’ and was considered country’s most respected figure.
