9. India proud to host India-Africa Summit: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed happiness in the country hosting the India-Africa Forum Summit 2015, saying it is a reflection of a desire to engage more intensively for a better future. “India is proud to host India-Africa Forum Summit 2015. The summit reflects India and Africa’s desire to engage more intensively for a better future,” Modi tweeted.

An India-African business seminar would be organised from October 26 to 29 in Delhi to explore areas of cooperation between the two sides.

10. Nitin, Sabhyata win U-16 national tennis titles

Nitin K Sinha outplayed top seed Parikshit Somani to win the Under-16 Boys trophy while Sabhyata Nihalani emerged champion in Girls U-16 event after a tough fight against Akansha Bhan in the Fenesta Open National Tennis championship.

The Under—14 boys titles was won by Mann Maulik Shah, who beat Shashikant Rajput 6—1 6—2 in the final. The girls U—14 trophy was won by Sanya Singh, who outplayed Salsa Ahir 6—3 6—1.

11. NRI journo honoured with lifetime achievement award in London

A city-based NRI journalist Mihir Bose has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement award by the Asian Cricket Awards in a ceremony at Lord’s Ground. Bose, a writer and broadcaster who was born in Kolkata, was commended for his contribution to cricket journalism and awarded this week.

His achievements include writing acclaimed books such as The Spirit of the Game and A History of Indian Cricket. Mihir also became BBC’s first Sports Editor and wrote for all the leading British newspapers including the Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph, Financial Times and London Evening Standard.

12. G Narayana Raju appointed legislative secretary

Senior Indian Legal Service officer G Narayana Raju has been appointed as the Legislative Secretary, the top draftsman of the government. Raju was with the Legislative Department of the Law Ministry till recently in various capacities. In May, he was appointed the member secretary of the Law Commission. Sanjay Singh had relinquished charge as Legislative Secretary in September and Law Secretary PK Malhotra was given additional charge of the department.

13. GR Chandak appointed as Director of CDFD

GR Chandak, has been appointed as the Director, Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), Hyderabad, under the Department of Biotechnology. A group leader at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, here, Chandak received his MD in Biochemistry from Benaras Hindu University and PhD from Osmania University.

His research interests include genetic understanding of complex disorders of pancreas,  type 2 diabetes etc.  His group has identified novel genes associated with chronic pancreatitis and showed its genetic basis to be different in Indians from that in the Europeans.

14. Nepal Elects First Woman as Parliament Speaker

Nepalese lawmakers have elected the country’s first woman speaker of Parliament following formation of a new government after promulgation of the Constitution. Parliament unanimously elected UCPN-Maoist lawmaker Onsari Gharti Magar as the Speaker of the House. Ms Gharti was elected unanimously to the post after Nepal Workers and Peasants Party withdrew the candidacy of its lawmaker Anuradha Thapa Magar.

15. AMFI elects Leo Puri as chief

The Association for Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), the industry body for mutual funds, on Friday elected Leo Puri of UTI AMC as its new Chairman and retained A Balasubramanian as Vice-Chairman. The former chairman had been Sundeep Sikka of Reliance AMC. The ₹13 lakh crore mutual fund industry is comprised of 44 fund houses, whose individual assets under management range from ₹1.7 lakh crore to as less as ₹30 crore.

16. Prasoon Joshi gets award

Bank of Baroda has conferred poet, lyricist and advertising guru Prasoon Joshi with Maharaja Sayajirao Bhasha Samman. The bank said in a statement that the award, in memory of Bank of Baroda’s founder Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad-III, was given to Joshi for his outstanding contribution in promoting Hindi.
