National Youth Day 2024 is observed on January 12

As well as being a day to celebrate, India’s National Youth Day (January 12) is an opportunity to think deeply about the values and principles espoused by Swami Vivekananda, one of the country’s most revered spiritual leaders and philosophers.

On this day, we remember him and the immense impact he had on Indian culture and the globe.

An Account of Swami Vivekananda’s Life and Work

A prominent role in the Western dissemination of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga, Swami Vivekananda was born in Kolkata on January 12, 1863.

His most famous speech was his introduction of Hinduism to Westerners at the 1893 Chicago Parliament of the World’s Religions, for which he is widely remembered.

His impact, however, goes well beyond the realm of spirituality; he was instrumental in Hinduism’s renaissance and helped foster a sense of national pride among Indian colonizers.

His influence was recognized by notable figures such as Subhas Chandra Bose and Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi specifically mentioned that Vivekananda’s works greatly intensified his affection for India.

The History of National Youth Day 2024

To celebrate the birth of Swami Vivekananda, the Indian government designated January 12 as National Youth Day in 1984.

The goal of this day is to encourage the next generation to contribute to the betterment of their country by drawing inspiration from the teachings of Swami Vivekananda.
