India ranks 130th in Human Development Index: UNDP

India has been ranked 130 in the latest report of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)’s Human Development Index. India has climbed  five spots up to 130 in a list of 188 countries for the year 2014. The 2015 Global Human Development Report was named “Work for Human Development”, was released in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Norway topped followed by Australia and Switzerland. As per the report, the HDI rank of Bangladesh and Pakistan was 142 and 147, respectively.  Between 1980 and 2014, India’s HDI value increased from 0.326 to 0.609,which is below the average of 0.630 for countries in the medium human development group and above the average of 0.607 for countries in South Asia. Among the BRICS nations, India was ranked lowest.

Highlights of the UNDP Report 2015 : 

  • Life expectancy at birth increased to 68 years in 2014 from 67.6 in the previous year and 53.9 in 1980.
  • Around 2 billion people have moved out of low human development levels in the last 25 years.
  • The Gender Inequality Index (GII), India ranks 130 out of 155 countries with a value of 0.563.
  • Only 39 percent of women in India were internet users compared to 61 percent of men in 2013.
