GOI has removed the ban from traditional bull taming game Jallikkattu.Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has given allowance to Jallikkattu to take place but at the same time it has set conditions for the Game in order to avoid cruelty to animals. The MoEF has also allowed bullock cart race called Rekhla race to take place in the states where it is traditionally performed. The MoEF has removed bulls from the list of animals banned from public display for entertainment.
Banned in Past
Jallikkattu was banned by Supreme Court of India in May 2014 considering the injuries sustained by the animals and participants while playing this game. Jallikkattu is played in the parts of Tamil Nadu during Pongal festival. In Jallikkattu a bull is released in the ground and a player tries to take control over the bull.
What are the Conditions imposed?
- According to the new regulations stated by MoEF it has become mandatory for district collectors and members of animal welfare board to monitor the game.
- They will also be responsible for testing the physical fitness of the bulls.
- At the same time the condition on bull fight also includes that participants have to hold the bull with in 15 metre radius in the animal enclosure.
- While, the bullock cart race has to be organized on a proper track in a range of two kilometres.
On the other hand, animal welfare NGOs like PETA showed their concern against the decision stating that the decision of MoEF is against the ruling of Supreme Court of India in this regard.
