1. Supreme Court : Acid victims under disability act

The Supreme Court on December 7 claimed that state governments should pay higher compensation to acid-attack survivors, stressing the need for rehabilitation of the victims. A bench comprising justices M.Y. Eqbal and C. Nagappan also directed governments of states and union territories to take steps to treat acid attack survivors as physically disabled people and offer the benefits that the disabled receive. In 2013, in the case of an acid attack survivor identified Laxmi, the apex court issued guidelines to regulate the sale of acid and storing of chemicals and suggested compensation schemes for survivors.

2. Indian-American entrepreneur to get Uttar Pradesh Ratna Award

An Indian-American entrepreneur and philanthropist will be conferred with Uttar Pradesh Ratna Award to recognise his achievements and outstanding contributions in a foreign country. Frank Islam, 63, who was born in Uttar Pradesh’s (UP) Azamgarh district and studied at Aligarh Muslim University, will be honoured by UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav at the inaugural UP Pravasi Diwas in Agra on January 4. The UP Ratna award has been instituted to recognise achievements and outstanding contributions of NRIs who hail from the state.

3. Genetically modified mosquitoes to help fight malaria

Scientists have genetically modified malaria-causing mosquitoes to become infertile and pass on the trait rapidly, an advance that may substantially reduce the transmission of the deadly disease. The mosquito species Anopheles gambiae is a major carrier of dangerous malaria parasites in sub-Saharan Africa, where 90 per cent of annual malaria deaths occur. Malaria infects more than 200 million people each year and causes more than 430,000 deaths.

4. Atomic Energy (Amendment) Bill, 2015 introduced in Lok Sabha to fast track nuclear power projects

Seeking to fast-track nuclear power projects in the country, a Bill to amend the Atomic Energy Act to enable Nuclear Power Corporation of India to enter into joint ventures with other public sector undertakings was introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 7. The amendment has been brought to facilitate the fast expansion of nuclear power, utility and establishment, living up to India’s commitment of using nuclear energy for peaceful purpose. The Atomic Energy (Amendment) Bill, 2015, was moved by Minister of State in the Department of Atomic of Energy (DAE) Jitendra Singh as the government wanted to expedite nuclear reactor projects in order to meet the requirements of electricity and energy in India even as constraint was being faced in terms of financial implications.

5. First red alert on pollution declared in Beijing

Schools in Beijing are closed and outdoor construction halted as the Chinese capital’s first ever pollution “red alert” came into effect. The alert, the highest possible warning level, was issued on December 7 and will last until midday on December 10. Limits have been placed on car use and some factories have been ordered to stop operations. It comes as China, the world’s worst polluter, takes part in talks on carbon emissions in Paris. It is the first time China has declared a red alert under the four-tier alert system, which was adopted a little over two years ago, although pollution levels were far from the city’s worst.

6. Lok Sabha passes High Court and Supreme Court Judges (Salaries and Conditions of Service) Amendment Bill, 2015

The Lok Sabha on December 7 passed a bill amending the law on salaries and service conditions of Supreme Court and high court judges to “bring in uniformity in pensions and other conditions of service of the judges. Replying to the discussion on the High Court and the Supreme Court Judges (Salaries and Conditions of Service) Amendment Bill, 2015, Law Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda said it was not brought in under any pressure from anybody and all the suggestions made by members were “well-taken”.

7. Maharashtra becomes first state to allow MLAs raise online question

The Maharashtra legislature has become the first in the country to launch an online mechanism for its members to send questions and move different motions in the House. In this regard state government has launched a website mls.org.in as part of Digital MLAs initiative in the winter session of state legislature in Nagpur.

8. India pick up historic win over South Africa

India win Kotla Test against South Africa to seal series 3-0. It took the Indians nearly six hours to displace AB de Villiers from the batting crease. It took the Indians a little over five overs to knock over the last five South African batsmen. And then it took less than 10 seconds for jubilant fielders to pluck out all three stumps behind a bewildered Morne Morkel, who had shouldered arms to R Ashwin and been bowled to give India a 337-run win and a 3-0 series scoreline. This was also India’s highest victory margin in terms of runs, beating their 320-run defeat of Australia in Mohali in 2008.

9. MoU Signed for Skill Development in Manufacutring Sector

An MoU for skill development in the manufacturing sector has been signed between Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and the Department of Heavy Industry (DHI).

What is the objective of the MoU?

The purpose of the MoU is to create centres of excellence for different manufacturing skills and a multi-location national institute of manufacturing technologies for training education and research by utilizing/upgrading the existing training facilities of Central PSUs such as HMT, BHEL and Instrumentation Ltd. under the DHI.

10. A Central Research Institute in Yoga and Naturopathy to be set up in Khordha District of Odisha

Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of AYUSH has obtained 20 acres of land from Odisha Government in Binjhagiri Village in Khordha District to establish a Central Research Institute in Yoga and Naturopathy.

Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, New Delhi is an autonomous organization under Central Government which is engaged in activities primarily related to education in Yoga.

11. New Andhra Pradesh capital Amaravati to cost over Rs 27,000 crore: Panel

An expert committee appointed for the new capital of Andhra Pradesh has suggested an estimated Rs 27,097 crore as the cost for building ‘Amaravati’. The expert committee appointed for the purpose of new capital of Andhra Pradesh had indicated Rs 10,519 crore for capital zone buildings, Rs 1,536 crore for capital zone infrastructure, Rs 5,861 crore for city infrastructure and Rs 9,181 crore for city infrastructure growth extension.

12. INS Sindhudhwaj bags award for innovation from PM Narendra Modi

INS Sindhudhwaj, a submarine of the Eastern Naval Command (ENC), has been awarded ‘The Best Innovation Trophy’ by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The award was given as part of the Navy Day celebrations that concluded recently. The innovation undertaken by the submarine to repair their ventilation system under challenging circumstances at sea during a search and rescue (SAR) operation was adjudged the first among the 137 entries of Navy.

13.Tech Mahindra bags ‘Forbes Top 100 Middle East – Global Meets Local 2015’ Award

Tech Mahindra, a specialist in digital transformation, consulting and business re-engineering, has been presented the prestigious ‘Forbes Top 100 Middle East – Global Meets Local 2015’ Award. The award was presented at a special event hosted by Forbes Middle East in Dubai, celebrating the top management executives that are heading up regional offices in the Middle East for the world’s most powerful companies.

GRSE launches fifth ship of Indian Navy’s LCU MK IV project

The fifth ship of Indian Navy’s LCU MK IV project, was launched on Monday at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) in Kolkata. LCU L-55 is the fifth vessel in the series of eight Landing Craft Utility Ships being designed and built by GRSE for the Indian Navy. The first ship of the class ‘LCU-L51’ was launched on March 12, 2014 and is presently undergoing trials at GRSE. The vessel is likely to be delivered shortly to Indian Navy.

14. Former FIFA referee SK Bhattacharya passes away

Former FIFA referee SK Bhattacharya has passed away in Chandanpur, West Bengal following a brief illness. He was 87 years. One of India’s most reputed referee in the 1960’s and 1970’s , Bhattacharya held the distinction of supervising the Asia Cup finals in the 1972 in Tehran. He also supervised the finals of all top tournaments in the country, including Durand Cup, DCM trophy and IAF Shield. Being very strict on the field, capital’s players, in the prestigious Delhi Senior Division league, were scared of his strict decisions and paid due respect.

15. MoU signed between Ministry of MSME & Ministry of Textiles for establishing a Technology Centre at Kanpur

A tripartite MoU has been signed among Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), Ministry of Textiles  & National Textile Corporation (NTC) in order to set up a Technology Centre (Tool Room) at Kanpur. Under the MoU, Ministry of MSME will fund the project, while NTC would provide the land in  a closed, unviable mill. The Technology Centre would provide support in manufacturing of quality tools that would improve productivity of MSMEs and enable them to become competitive in national and international markets; it would also provide trained manpower and consultancy in related areas.
