Atulesh Jindal to be New CBDT Chief

Senior Indian Revenue Service officer Atulesh Jindal is all set to take charge as the new chairman of the CBDT, the controlling body of the income tax department. He will succeed incumbent A K Jain. The appointments committee of the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved the appointment of Jindal as the next Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes on January 22.

1,600 villages along Ganga to be cleaned: Bharti

The government of India is all set to clean 1,600 village panchayat headquarters along the river banks within the next six months and complete the first phase of Ganga cleaning by October this year. The second phase will be attained in four years after that in which 6,000 villages will be taken up for the programme. Bharti was speaking on the sidelines of ‘Swachh Ganga- Gramin Sahbhagita’, a national-level consultation programme organised for heads of villages located along the river banks.

GOI to create ‘Khadi Gramudyog’ network

Prime Minister Narendra Modi saat id ththe government wants to create a network of Khadi Gramudyog across villages in the country to provide more job opportunities through the sector. PM Modi expressed happiness saying the government’s efforts to promote khadi were bearing fruit as various state-owned institutions were using products made from the fabric.

Tamil Nadu to set up 800MW supercritical coal-based power plant

Tamil Nadu government is all set to establish the state’s first 800 mw supercritical coal-based power plant, with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa laying the foundation stone for the Rs 6,000 crore project. Public sector unit BHEL has been awarded contract for the Rs 6,376 crore project which will come up at Athipattu in Tiruvallur district over 250 acres of land.

Jet Airways launches booking feature “Fare Lock”

Jet Airways, India’s premier airline, has introduced a new booking feature called ‘Fare lock’, which allows the passengers the flexibility to retain a selected fare for a limited period of time before confirming the purchase at a later date. Once a passenger selects the FareLock option, he will need to pay a nominal fee for availing the same. The fee is Rs. 350 for domestic flights and Rs. 700 for an international ticket to “lock the fare”.

NASA to Test First Integrated-Photonics Modem

NASA’s first-ever “integrated-photonics” modem will be tested aboard the International Space Station beginning in 2020 as part of Nasa’s multi-year Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD). The cell phone-sized device incorporates optics-based functions such as lasers, switches and wires onto a microchip much like an integrated circuit found in all electronics hardware. Once aboard the ISS, the so-called Integrated LCRD LEO (Low-Earth Orbit) User Modem and Amplifier (ILLUMA) will serve as a low-Earth orbit terminal for Nasa’s LCRD, demonstrating yet another capability for high-speed, laser-based communications.

Djokovic thrashes Murray to claim sixth Australian Open title

World number one Novak Djokovic hammered a misfiring Andy Murray in straight sets to win a record-equalling sixth Australian Open title and strengthen his grip on men’s tennis. The Serbian world number one swept to a 6-1, 7-5, 7-6 (7/3) victory in two hours, 53 minutes to hand Murray his fifth defeat in the Australian Open final.

Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi wins MRF Challenge crown

Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi clinched the title at the MMRT track in Sriperumbudur. Fittipaldi, the 17-year old grandson of former Formula One World champion Emerson Fittipaldi, enjoyed a fruitful weekend as he won two of the four races which earned him the required points to clinch the title with a tally of 244 points while Colombian Tatiana Calderon finished second (199), just eight ahead of Nikita Troitckii of Russia (191).

Kerber beats Serena to win first Grand Slam title

Germany’s Angelique Kerber stunned world number one Serena Williams in three sets to win her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. Kerber, seeded seventh, won a thrilling final 6-4 3-6 6-4 at Melbourne Park. The 28-year-old is the first German to win a major singles title since Steffi Graf at the 1999 French Open. Williams, 34, was beaten for just the fifth time in 26 Grand Slam finals, and the American missed the chance to tie Graf’s open-era record of 22 titles. Kerber, who saved a match point in her first-round win over Misaki Doi, will move up to number two in the world rankings.

Srikanth wins first Syed Modi Grand rix Gold

Top seed Kidambi Srikanth made a rollicking start to the new season as he clinched the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold with a convincing win over China’s Huang Yuxiang in the men’s singles final. World No. 9 Srikanth, who had reached the summit clash in the last edition as well, prevailed over 73rd ranked Huang 21-13, 14-21, 21-14 to lay his hands on the crown and take home a cheque of $9000. It was his fifth title having won the 2013 Thailand Grand Prix Gold, 2014 China Super Series premier and Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold and India Super Series last year.

OBITUARY

Malayalam actor Kollam G K Pillai passes away

Veteran cinema-television actor G. Krishna Pillai passed away. Pillai (82) was undergoing treatment for age-related illness and died at his house. A theatre-turned cinema-television actor, Mr. Pillai is known for his character and comedy roles in dramas, movies and TV serials. Popularly known as Kollam G.K. Pillai, he began his acting career through theatre.
