1. Indian-origin Antonio Costa is new Portugal Prime Minister

Portugal President Anibal Cavaco Silva has appointed Goa-origin Antonio Costa as the new prime minister of Portugal. Costa’s Socialist Party (PS) did not win the October 4 election but he cobbled together a coalition of left parties that has a little more than the majority mark in the 230-member Assembly. His party finished second, with 86 seats.

2. Sunil Kanoria takes over as Assocham president

SREI Infrastructure Finance vice-chairman Sunil Kanoria on November 25 assumed charge as president of industry body Assocham. Kanoria has been instrumental in bringing over Rs 34,000 crore (over USD 5 billion) of consolidated assets under SREI which became one of the first NBFCs to get listed on the London Stock Exchange. He is also the joint Managing Director of SREI BNP Paribas, a 50:50 joint-venture between SREI Infrastructure Finance Limited and BNP Paribas Leasing Group, France.

3. Kerala to have price regulatory authority for hotels

The cabinet on November 25 officially made the Kerala Hotel (Food Price Regulation) Bill 2015 which forecasted formation of regulatory authority for grading eateries and fixing food prices. Accordingly, when the bill is enacted into a law, the state would have hotel food price regulatory boards at all districts, which would be headed by a district judge or a law officer of similar rank. Except hotels in star and heritage categories, all eateries would come under the regulatory board. As per the bill, all eateries would have to register with the regulatory authority, which would fix the prices of the food items. Hotels would be allowed to increase the food prices only after a formal consent from the authority, which would have the power to slap fine on eateries charging for items above the notified prices.

4. IRCTC widens Food on Track, ties up with Food Panda

To broaden its innovative e-catering facility ‘Food on Track’, IRCTC has tied up with online delivery firm Food Panda. To enable consumers to order from a variety of cuisine options. The collaboration, to be launched in New Delhi railway station next month. It will provide customers with the choice to order meals at least two hours before the travel, according to Dr. A. K. Manocha, Chairman and Managing Director of IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation), which is a 1999-founded subsidiary of the Railways.

5. Verghese Kurien’s 94th Birth Anniversary Celebrated by Google

Google is celebrating 94th birth anniversary of popular social entrepreneur Verghese Kurien by posting a doodle on its homepage showing the white revolution with milk can in his hand. Kurien, also known as ‘Father of the White Revolution’, turned India from milk-deficient country to the world’s largest milk producer, exceeding America in 1998 with about 17 percent of world’s output in 2010-11. With his sheer efforts, the daily farming became India’s largest self-sustaining industry.

6. Veteran soap actor David Canary passes away at 77

Longtime soap opera actor David Canary, best known for his role as twin brothers on “All My Children” has died at age 77. Canary died of natural causes on Nov. 16 at his home at The Greens at Cannondale in Wilton, Connecticut, Paul Pyrch of the Bouton Funeral Home said on November 25.

7. INS Vikramaditya to host Combined Commanders’ 

The Combined Commanders’ Conference of the three services will be held next month onboard India’s latest aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya in Kochi. This will be the first venue outside the national capital to host the crucial defence meet. The move came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address at the Combined Commanders’ Conference here October last, suggested that the armed forces could organise such conferences on ships, or in forward area cantonments or air-bases, instead of only in New Delhi.

8. India successfully test-fires nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile

India on November 26 successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile, as part of a user trial by the army. It has a strike range of 350 km. The missile test was carried out from a mobile launcher from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near here at 1210 hrs. The trial data of the missile conducted by the Strategic Force Command (SFC) shows positive results. The surface-to-surface Prithvi-II missile is capable of carrying 500 kg to 1,000 kg of warheads and is thrusted by liquid propulsion twine engines. It uses advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring trajectory to hit its target.

9. Trilochan Pradhan conferred with Kalinga Samman, 2014

Eminent physicist and Padma Bhushan Trilochan Pradhan has been conferred with the prestigous “Kalinga Samman 2014”. He has been conferred this award for popularising science among the common man in Odisha. Pradhan was honoured by chief minister Naveen Patnaik at a function on November 25.

10. India, US make progress on jet engine, aircraft carrier cooperation

Ahead of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar’s maiden US visit next month, the two countries have made progress on their ambitious collaboration in the fields of jet engine and aircraft carrier technology. The terms of reference for Jet Engine Technology Joint Working Group has been finalised and is likely to be signed next month, while the second meeting of the Joint Working Group on Aircraft Carrier Technology Cooperation (JWGACTC) has been slated for next February.

11. Rajya Sabha MP Khekiho Zhimomi passes away

Rajya Sabha was on November 26 adjourned for the day as a mark of respect to sitting member Khekiho Zhimomi of Nagaland People’s Front, who died this morning. When the House met on the opening day of the winter session, Chairman Hamid Ansari mentioned the passing away of 69-year old Zhimomi. He was admitted at the AIIMS for the past few days and died this morning after suffering a stroke. An active social worker who strived for upliftment of weaker and backward sections of society, Zhimomi represented the state of Nagaland in the Upper House for two terms – from July 2008 to April 2010 and from April 2010 till date. The House stood in silence as mark of respect in the memory of Zhimomi and three other former members – Ram Kapse, Rudra Pratap Singh and N Rajendran.

12. November 26 – Constitution Day

The ‘Constitution Day’ of India is being observed on 26th November to spread awareness of Indian Constitution and its architecture Dr. B R Ambedkar. On the day in 1949, constitution of India was adopted which came into force on January 26, 1950 marking the beginning of a new era in the history of free India. Key facts 2015 Constitution Day is the first edition of this day and part of year-long nationwide celebrations of 125th birth Anniversary of Dr. B R Ambedkar, Chairman of the Drafting Committee of Constituent Assembly. Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE) is the nodal Ministry for celebration of Constitution Day. It has organised number of activities on the occasion of the first Constitution Day in order to spread awareness the supreme law of the country and living document which makes the government system work effectively.
