1. Army chief conferred honorary title of Nepal Army General

Indian Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat arrived in Kathmandu for a four-day official visit during which he will be conferred the honorary rank of general of the Nepal Army. The title will be conferred by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari during a special function at the President’s Office. Nepal and India have a long tradition of conferring such titles on the chiefs of their armies since 1950 to signify the close military-to-military ties.

  1. Sima Kamil becomes first woman to lead a major Pakistani bank

Sima Kamil, a veteran banker was appointed as the President and CEO of the United Bank Limited (UBL), becoming the first woman to lead a major Pakistani bank.  Kamil, who will initially serve as deputy CEO at UBL, is slated to take over the top slot after May 31, when the current CEO Wajahat Hussain leaves the company.

  1. 1st time India becomes Net Exporter of Electricity

India has become a net exporter of electricity for the first time, the power ministry has adding that upcoming cross-border transmission lines with neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar will only increase sales.April-February power exports of around 5,798 million units were 4 percent higher than what India bought from Bhutan, which has been a steady supplier of hydro-electricity to the country since the eighties.

  1. IRDAI imposed penalty on ICICI Pru Life

The insurance regulator has imposed a penalty of ₹20 lakh on ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company on various charges, including free look cancellations not being in line with regulations; maturity claims not being settled within prescribed time period, resulting in huge number of claims outstanding; and delay in processing surrenders/partial withdrawals. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India has also charged the private sector life insurer for considerable number of annuities being outstanding for want of verification certificate.

  1. Paytm, The first e-commerce company to become ASCI member

The country’s fast-growing e-commerce industry will finally mark its presence at the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI), with Paytm set to become a member of the self-regulatory voluntary organisation next month. The move is significant because advertising violations by e-commerce companies, which are big spenders on television, print and digital media, have been on the rise in recent years.

  1. SBI launches ‘Unnati’ credit card

SBI Card has launched a unique credit card ‘SBI Card Unnati’ targeted at all SBI customers, including Jan Dhan account-holders across the country. Tailored for new users of credit cards — those who do not have a credit history — ‘Unnati’ would have no annual fees for the initial four years and will be offered through the 20,000-plus SBI branches. The card was launched by Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines.

  1. AAI, DRDO and Govt. of Jharkhand Signed a Tripartite MoU

Airports Authority of India, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Govt. of Jharkhand signed a tripartite MoU for development of Deoghar Airport in Deoghar district of Jharkhand. The existing Deoghar Airport will be developed for operations of A-320 and C-130 Aircraft. Signing of MoU took place in a ceremony held at the CM Residence.

  1. INLCU L51 commissioned into India Navy

INLCU L51 was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 28 Mar 2017 by Vice Admiral Bimal Verma, AVSM, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command at Port Blair. The commissioning ceremony was attended by Vice Admiral Dilip Deshpande, Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition, Rear Admiral VK Saxena (Retd), CMD, GRSE and other senior officers from Indian Navy.

  1. UN appoints David Beasley to head World Food Programme

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has appointed former South Carolina Governor David Beasley to run the Rome-based World Food Programme (WFP), at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed slashing funding for the world body and its agencies. Beasley will replace another American, Ertharin Cousin, who has been the WFP executive director since 2012. Washington was the top contributor to WFP in 2016 with $2 billion, a third of the agency’s budget.

  1. Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy presented to Ashwin by Kapil Dev

Indias off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has received the Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICC Cricketer of the Year 2016 as well as the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year 2016 from former India captains and ICC Cricket Hall of Famers Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar.
