Wordsmith – D2G’s Glossary Ep 26

Wordsmith is another initiative by the DayTodayGK team. Vocabulary indeed plays an important part in our daily life. Albeit we all have knowledge but we are unable to communicate due to lack of confidence, linguistic abilities and most of the time, we are unable to understand the meaning of the particular word.

So, here we present D2G’s Glossary in which we will share 10 words daily and we would encourage you to do the same. With this, we can increase our knowledge and build our Vocabulary stronger.

1) Relegate: Verb

Meaning: consign or dismiss to an inferior rank or position (निर्वासित कर देना)
sentence: The music, his real career, was relegated to after-hours and vacations.

2)Begrime: Verb
Meaning: blacken with ingrained dirt (धूल-धूसरित करना)
sentence : The habitations are begrimed with smut and dirt.

3)Concordant: Adjective
Meaning: in agreement; consistent ( सहमत)
sentence: Identical twins are not 100% concordant , indicating that there are nongenetic factors involved.

meaning : the quality of being prudent; cautiousness(बुद्धिमानी)
sentence : My dissent had nothing to do with principles; it was a matter of prudence or judgment.

5)Yammer : Verb ,Noun
Meaning : make a loud repetitive noise(शिकायत करना)
sentence : She was yammering about this or that, while her two male friends sat down across from me – I’ll call them Drunk and Drunker.

6)Connoisseur : Noun
Meaning : an expert judge in matters of taste(विशेषज्ञ )
Sentence: Like the original structure, his piece has a beauty that lures connoisseurs

7) Veils :Noun , verb
Meaning :a piece of fine material worn by women to protect or conceal the face (पर्दा )
Sentence: she veiled her face

8)Avow :Verb
Meaning :assert or confess openly (खुलकर कहना )
Sentence : he avowed that he had voted Republican in every election.

9) Détente: Noun
Meaning: the easing of hostility or strained relations, especially between countries (अमन)
Sentence : a serious effort at detente with the eastern bloc

10) Ameliorate: verb
Meaning : make (something bad or unsatisfactory) better (सुधारना)
Sentence: the reform did much to ameliorate living standards.
