What is the job of a Sanitary Inspector?


In a country like India where still a large population is living below the poverty line with low standards of living, sanitation becomes an issue. The country has to employ officials to look after the sanitation of people so that they are not attacked by some deadly disease due to their unclean surroundings and living conditions. They need to carry out regular surveys and organize educative sessions to make people aware of sanitation and the damages that improper sanitation can do to them and their family members.

There are some courses that can be done if one wants to become a sanitation inspector. The name of the course is Sanitary Inspector Diploma Course. The eligibility criteria for applying in this course are:

  1. The candidates should have passed 12th standard in any stream.
  2. The candidates should have completed graduation in any stream except dance, music and fine arts.
  3. Those who have done diploma in engineering.
  4. Those who have completed two years technical course after class 10.
  5. Those who have done MPHW course of state government.

The main objective of the course is to give practical as well as technical training to the people who wish to join Health and Sanitation Departments in Railways, State Government, District Councils, Airport or any similar institute. The overall care of health and sanitation, environmental conditions, family welfare are included within this course. This is a one year course in which admissions can be taken twice a year, from January and June every year. The centers where these courses can be done are Lucknow, Pune, Patna, Rajkot, Vizag, Jammu, Indore, Ahmedabad, Vyara and many more places.

The roles of a sanitary inspector are as follows:

  1. Surveying the area under him to know if any diseases can spread or if environmental conditions are degrading.
  2. They must organize disinfectant programs.
  3. The need to collect sample food and water for testing sanitation level.
  4. They need to organize inoculation.
  5. Organizing educational programs and workshops to increase sanitation awareness.
  6. Update in sanitary habits of people by making them know and understand the importance of it.
  7. Look into the cases where food poisoning has occurred and preventing the same in future.
  8. Keep in check cemetery for:
  • The areas water supply.
  • The pyres provisionary system.
  • Maintenance of sanitation and structure.
  • Firewood stock.
  • Staff attendance.
  • Registry maintenance.
  1. Make death certificate, enquiries about the dead person and so on.
  • Making registrations for newborns whose birth is not registered yet.
  • Keep a check on dispensaries for:
  • Stock of medicine.
  • Staff attendance.
  • Cleanliness and sanitation
  • Keep a check on mobile dispensaries.
  • Keep a check whether food adulteration rules are being maintained or not.
  • Maintain the register of granted licenses.
  • Checking staff register.
  • Disposal of paper of complaints.
  • Inspection of amusement parks, cinema halls, drama theatres and so on to check if they are working according to Municipal Acts or not.
  • Maintenance of field register to keep a check on the work done in field.
  • Perform duties as said by the seniors and superiors.
  • Destruction of food found exposed to dust and flies.
  • Interviewing people to get additional information.
  • Organizing regular round ups to ensure perfect health and sanitation of households.
  • Observation of conditions and regular recording of these.
  • The premises where animals are kept should be inspected to check the licensing and grants.
  • Keeping check on food establishments to ensure healthy food and avoid food poisoning.
