Tom Moore passes away

Cartoonist Tom Moore, who brought to life the freckle-faced, red-haired character Archie Andrews, has died. He was 86. Moore’s creation was enduringly recognizable. Moore drew Archie Andrews and his friends on and off from 1953 until the late 1980s when he retired. He died on 20th July 2015 in hospice care in his hometown of El Paso, Texas.

  • Moore began drawing cartoons while he was in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
  • He later used his GI Bill to attend a school in New York for cartoonists.
  • He studied under “Tarzan” comic strip illustrator Burne Hogarth.
  • Thereafter, he signed up with Archie Comics.
  • Moore was also an illustrator forSnuffy Smith, Underdog and Mighty Mouse.
