11. South Africa hit third highest ODI total to win India series

South Africa posted the joint-third highest total in one-day international history and lifted the Paytm Trophy as they beat India by 214 runs in Mumbai to win the series 3-2. Quinton de Kock (109), Faf du Plessis (133) and skipper AB de Villiers (119) all hit centuries in their 438-4. Only once before has a team made three centuries in an ODI, also South Africa against West Indies in January. India were all out for 224 in the 36th over, their second heaviest ODI defeat in terms of runs.

12. Lewis Hamilton wins 2015 US Grand Prix of F1 to clinch third world title

Defending champion Lewis Hamilton of Britain secured his third drivers’ championship in dramatic fashion when he took victory in United States Grand Prix. The 30-year-old, who started from second on the grid, came home 2.850 seconds clear of his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg to deliver his 10th victory of a dominant season. Hamilton now has an unbeatable total of 327 points, moving him beyond the reach of both Rosberg, who finished second, and four-time champion Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari, who came home third.

13. Scientists detect Ethyl Alcohol and Simple Sugar from gas emitted by Comet Lovejoy

Scientists have identified two complex organic molecules, or building blocks of life, on a comet for the first time, shedding new light on the cosmic origins of planets like Earth. Ethyl alcohol and a simple sugar known as glycolaldehyde were detected in Comet Lovejoy. Other organic molecules have previously been discovered in comets, most recently in comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, on which the European space agency’s Philae found four that had never before been detected on a comet.

14. NDRF ties up with 30 PSUs to jointly tackle emergencies

The NDRF, country’s elite disaster mitigation combat force, has tied up with about 30 PSUs in order to develop mutual understanding and enhance capabilities to jointly tackle man-made or natural emergencies. A coordination meeting in this regard was held recently here between the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and prominent Public Sector Undertakings like ONGC, GAIL, Air India and those in the mining and shipping and heavy industries sector. Over 40 senior officials from these PSUs took part in the maiden meeting held here on October 23.

15. Abhishek Verma wins Silver medal at Archery World Cup Final

Abhishek Verma bagged India’s first ever Archery World Cup Final medal in the compound section as he won the silver medal after being pipped by Turkey’s Demir Elmaagcli. The 26-year-old Verma, an Asian Games individual silver medallist, capped an impressive campaign when he dealt a perfect 150 on giant killer Mario Cardoso in the semifinals but only to go down 143-145 in the gold medal match against Elmaagcli to settle for a silver. Earlier, fifth seeded Verma had defeated fourth seeded Martin Damsbo of Denmark 148-146 in the quarterfinals.

16. 7.7 magnitude quake rocks South Asia, epicentre in Afghanistan

A massive earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale today jolted north India, with panic-stricken people rushing out of houses and buildings that shook during the temblor lasting almost a minute. According to reports, four people have been killed in northwestern Pakistan. Pakistani rescue officials say a powerful earthquake struck neighboring Afghanistan shaking the capital Kabul and killing at least 24 people while 76 were killed in neighbouring Pakistan.

17. India finishes 9th at Nomura Cup

The Indian team, led by Aman Raj, finished ninth on the final day of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Golf Team Championship, Nomura Cup at the Yas Links Golf Club of Abu Dhabi.  Raj’s four days total of 10-under 278 played a big role in India collecting the team total of one-under 863 (218, 219, 210, 216). His teammates Samarth Dwivedi, Rahul Ravi and Harimohan Singh, IGU ranked 3rd, 5th and 7th respectively, struggled to put up a low score throughout the week.

18. WHO released report titled Reducing global health risks through mitigation of short-lived climate pollutants

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a report titled Reducing global health risks through mitigation of short-lived climate pollutants. The report was produced in collaboration of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants, a voluntary global partnership of governments, intergovernmental organizations, businesses, scientific institutions and civil society.

19. China made copying in examinations a crime punishable up to seven years

From November 2015, students trying to copy in examinations in China will face a jail term of up to seven years as the government has brought about a new law making cheating a crime. The new law, effective from November 1, will make cheating on major exams in China a crime punishable with a jail sentence. Parents involved will also be seriously punished, according to the law.

The amended criminal law stipulates that those who aid in cheating will be sentenced to three to seven years in prison and face penalties. The law also stipulates that people trying to impersonate during examinations will be detained by police.

20. Nandakumara, Sivanesan honoured in UK with Lifetime Achievement Award & Sangeet Acharya Ratna

Dr M N Nandakumara and Sivasakthi Sivanesan were honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award and Sangeet Acharya Ratna Award respectively, for their contribution to Indian arts and music. Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Ranjan Mathai presented the awards, at a function held at the Nehru centre recently. Milapfest, an Indian arts development trust hosted and established the awards in order to recognise the dedication of arts professionals working in the field of Indian arts and to celebrate the hard work and passion of young artists.
