9. US to extend military presence in Afghanistan beyond 2016

President Barack Obama has confirmed plans to extend the US military presence in Afghanistan beyond 2016. Obama said the US would keep 5,500 troops in the country when he leaves office in 2017. The US military says more troops will be needed to help Afghan forces counter a growing Taliban threat. There are currently 9,800 US troops stationed in Afghanistan. The US forces will be stationed in four locations – Kabul, Bagram, Jalalabad and Kandahar.

10. Myanmar Government inks peace pact with 8 ethnic rebels groups

The Myanmar government has signed a peace accord with eight of the 15 ethnic armed groups, a ceremony which was attended by India along with other five “international witnesses”. Apart from India, which was represented by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, other international representation was from China, Japan, Thailand, the United Nations and the European Union.

11. RBI formed Financial Inclusion Fund with Rs. 2000 crore corpus

The RBI has announced merger of two funds to create a new Financial Inclusion Fund with a corpus of Rs 2,000 crore to support “developmental and promotional activities” for expanding reach of banking services. After completion of initial five years, the RBI said it had now been decided to merge the Financial Inclusion Fund and the Financial Inclusion Technology Fund into a single Fund — Financial Inclusion Fund (FIF).

12. Kundhavi Kadiresan appointed as Assistant Director of FAO

Kundhavi Kadiresan has been appointed as the Assistant Director of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific. She was appointed at the post by FAO Director General José Graziano da Silva. Kadiresan succeeded Hiroyuki Konuma who retired from FAO earlier in 2015.

13. China, Indonesia sign USD 5.5 bn high-speed rail deal

Chinese and Indonesian state-owned companies have signed a USD 5.5 billion deal to build the first high-speed railway in Southeast Asia’s top economy, after Beijing beat Tokyo to win the construction project. The line will connect the Indonesian capital Jakarta with the mountain-fringed city of Bandung, some 160 kilometres away, and is a key part of President Joko Widodo’s plans to overhaul the archipelago’s infrastructure and attract investors.

14. M K Surana appointed new HPCL Chairman

MK Surana will be the new Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL), India’s third largest oil marketing company. Government headhunter Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) selected Surana for the top job at HPCL after interviewing a dozen candidates. Surana, 53, is currently the CEO of Prize Petroleum Co Ltd, the upstream oil exploration arm of HPCL. He will replace Nishi Vasudeva on her retirement at the end of March 2016.

Former India batsman VVS Laxman stars in a brand-new ad for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India during Vegetarian Awareness Month (October).

16. England women’s keeper Taylor to make history

England wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor will make history when she becomes the first woman to play in a men’s A-grade cricket match in Australia. Taylor will appear for the Northern Districts club against Port Adelaide on the opening day of a two-day match in South Australia’s elite men’s competition. No woman has played in the competition since it began in 1987 and it is believed none has done so in a two-day match in a men’s A-grade tournament in any other state.
