1. Music composer Ravindra Jain passes away at 71

Veteran music director Ravindra Jain has passed away on October 9. The 71-year-old music composer was suffering from a urinary infection which had caused a problem in his kidney. Ravindra Jain was supposed to have been in the hospital for two more days, but he breathed his last on Friday (October 9). Ravindra Jain had composed music for hit films like Chor Machaye Shor, Geet Gaata Chal, Chitchor and Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se in the 70s.

2. Future Group ties up with Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved

Retail major Future Group has entered into a partnership with Baba Ramdev-promoted Patanjali Ayurved to sell the latter’s FMCG products through its stores with plans for joint manufacturing in future. Patanjali’s range of FMCG products, including staples, nutrition, hair care, skin care, dental care and toiletries, will be sold through Future Group’s Big Bazaar, KB’s and EasyDay outlets across India.

3. World Mental health Day

World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health. The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.

The theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day, observed on 10 October, is “Dignity in mental health”.

4. Indirect Tax collections increase by 32.6% over the corresponding period in the previous year

Reflecting an increase in economic activity, Indirect Tax Revenue (Provisional) collections have increased from 46,224 crore rupees in September 2014 to 61,284 crore rupees during September 2015. Thus an increase of 32.6% has been registered during September 2015 over the corresponding period in the previous year.

5. Tapan Ray appointed to Board of Securities and Exchange Board of India.

Corporate Affairs Secretary Tapan Ray has been appointed to the Board of capital market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Ray succeeded Anjuly Chib Duggal on the SEBI board. A Gujarat cadre IAS officer, Ray has served in various capacities in Gujarat between 1984 and 1994. He has also handled other assignments at the Centre in Power, Science and Technology, Textiles and Defence Ministries.

6. France initiates smart city projects with 2 bn Euro loan

Smart City project for sustainable development, with two billion Euro assistance from the French government, has begun in Puducherry with Nagpur and Chandigarh being next in the line. French envoy to India Francois Richier said the French development agency, AFD, has already joined hands with these state administrations. AFD will provide technological support in the areas of water, sanitation, transport and waste management in these cities.

7. Boxer Dheeraj Rangi wins silver at World Military Games

Lightweight (60 kg) boxer Dheeraj Rangi secured the silver medal in the World Military Games being held in Mungyeong, South Korea. The 20-year-old Indian fighter went down to Algeria’s Yahia Abdelli in the gold medal bout and settled for second place, the lone Indian boxer to do so in the Games. India won four medals in all in boxing at these games.

8. SAARC sufi festival begins in Jaipur

The SAARC sufi festival, a three-day carnival of sufi dance, music and poetry was opened by Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh at Jaipur. Artists from several countries will take part in the festival, in which sufi dance, music, poetry recitals, book readings, book launches and interactive sessions will be held. The event is being organised by the Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature (FOSWAL).

9. Mumbai world’s cheapest city: Report

Mumbai has emerged as the world’s cheapest city to live and work in, among 12 top metropolitan cities of the world. London, Hong Kong and New York are the world’s most expensive cities for companies to accommodate employees, with costs in London going through the roof, says Savills World Research. The cheapest city in the index is Mumbai, where it costs just $29,088 to accommodate an employee, up only 2.4% since 2008, while Shanghai comes in at $38,089, up 15.6%.

10. Girish Shankar appointed Secretary, Department of Official Language

Senior IAS officer Girish Shankar has been appointed as Secretary of the Department of Official Language under the Home Ministry. Shankar is at present Additional Secretary in the Tourism Ministry.

11. China successfully launches satellite made by students

China has launched a satellite developed by a group of students which is used for global maritime automatic identification and demonstrating information exchanges between satellites in-orbit. The satellite “Nanligong-1”, developed by Students in Nanjing University of Technology and Engineering independently has already started transmitting data.

12. Melbourne to host President Cup golf in 2019; World Cup in 2016

The Presidents Cup will travel to the golf course of Melbourne in 2019 after it is held at the Liberty National, New Jersey in 2017. The state of Victoria will also host the 2016 World Cup of golf. The partnership marks a return of The Presidents Cup to Australia for the third time in its 25-year history and fifth time in the 58-year history of the World Cup of Golf.

13. Renowned Flautist N. Ramani passes away

Flautist N Ramani passed away in Chennai. He was 81. Ramani had been suffering from throat cancer for the last few years. Born in Tiruvarur in 1934, Ramani was the student of famous flautist T R Mahalingam, also known as ‘Flute Mali’ in the Carnatic music circles. Belonging to the old school of Carnatic music, Ramani was in the shadow of Mali till his death. After this, he made a name for himself in the Carnatic as well as Hindustani music.

14. Shekhar Basu appointed as Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission

Renowned scientist Sekhar Basu was on Friday appointed as chairman of Atomic Energy Commission. Basu, who is presently director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and chief executive of the Nuclear Recycle Board (NRB), will replace RK Sinha who superannuates on October 23 and he will will have a tenure till September 19, 2016. Basu has also been appointed Secretary, department of atomic energy.

15. BRICS nations issues Joint Declaration to ensure orderly & legal migration

The BRICS nations have issued a Joint Declaration to ensure orderly and legal migration amongst member nations and respect human rights. The declaration was issued at the first BRICS Ministerial meeting on Migration held in Sochi, Russia in line with Ufa Declaration. Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju had led the Indian delegation to this meeting.

16. Balaji is new national tennis champion

N Sriram Balaji played a solid game throughout to become the new national champion and earn a wild card for the 2016 Delhi Open as he beat Vishnu Vardhan in the final of the Fenesta Open, the national hard court tennis championship, held in New Delhi. It was double delight for Balaji as he had won the men’s doubles title, too, with partner V M Ranjeet.

Prerna Bhambri though defended her women’s singles title with an overwhelming 6-0 6-1 win over Samitha Sai Chamarthi and earned a wild card for USD 25,000 ITF women event in Delhi Open.

17. Sidharth Malhotra gears up as New Zealand tourism ambassador.

Sidharth Malhotra was recently announced as Tourism New Zealand’s ambassador for India and the actor says he is looking forward to visit the beautiful country. The 30-year-old “Brothers” actor is the first Indian ambassador for Tourism New Zealand.

18. AR Rahman to receive Hridaynath Mangeshkar Award

Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman will be honoured with the Hridaynath Mangeshkar Award in Mumbai on October 26. Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai will present the fifth Hridaynath Award to Mr Rahman on the birth anniversary of Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar, younger brother of legendary playback singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. The first Hridaynath Award was presented to Lata Mangeshkar. Asha Bhosle, Amitabh Bachchan and Sulochana Tai have also received this award.

19. Andhra Pradesh Government launched e-Pragati project

Government of Andhra Pradesh on 9 October 22015 launched Andhra Pradesh State Enterprise Architecture (APSEA). It is alternatively called as e-Pragati project. It was launched by the state Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at a function held in Visakhapatnam. It aims for a transformational change in the way government services are conceived, designed, delivered and consumed.
