Prashant Damle to get Dinanath Mangeshkar award

Noted Marathi actor Prashant Damle will be conferred with the Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Award for outstanding contribution in the field of theatre, film and music.  The announcement was made by Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar at the 100th show of Damle’s Marathi play Karti Kaljat Ghusli.

The prestigious annual award is given to personalities from Marathi and Hindi theatre, music and films. Instituted in 1999 by Lata Mangeshkar and her family in the fond memory of her father, the award comprises of a cash prize of Rs one lakh, a moment and a citation. The announcement of this year’s award was done by Hridaynath Mangeshkar, who was the chief guest for the 100th show of the Karti Kaljat Ghusli.

Telecom Ministry Puts BSNL, MTNL on Notice Over Service Quality

The Telecom Ministry has issued notices to state-owned BSNL, MTNL and India Posts after Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad personally took note of citizen complaints over service quality on social media since July.  Prasad, who has over 4.65 lakh followers on Facebook, received the complaints relating to the three departments under his ministry. The Minister has asked BSNL and other concerns to use the social media, following which it held a workshop for officers in-charge of public grievance redressal in each telecom circle.

Swachh Delhi Abhiyan launched in Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has launched ‘Swachh Delhi’ app enabling residents to apprise authorities with pics of garbage, and announced ‘Swachh Delhi Abhiyan’ from November 22 to 30. Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu along with Kejriwal will inaugurate the ‘Swachh Delhi Abhiyan’, a cleanliness drive, a joint initiative of the central government, Delhi government and all three municipal corporations of the city, on November 22.

‘Swachh Delhi’ app, that turned effective from Monday (November 23), has enabled residents to click pictures of garbage and apprise a centralised control room that will direct the concerned government body to attend the complaint.

Francois Hollande to be Chief Guest at 2016 Republic Day celebrations

France has accepted India’s invitation to President Francois Hollande to be chief guest at the Republic Day parade in 2016. The decision comes in the wake of the attacks in Paris following which world nations including India have rallied behind France. French President Francois Hollande has appealed for a global coalition to destroy Islamic State in the wake of the attacks across Paris. The visit may also see breakthrough in key arms deals like the purchase of Rafale jets. Hollande’s predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy was Chief Guest at the Republic Day parade in 2008.

UP Government’s Clean UP, Green UP initiative earns place in Guinness Book

The Uttar Pradesh government has earned a place in the Guinness World Records for planting the most number of plants in 24 hours. Under the Clean UP, Green UP initiative, the government had urged citizens and officials to plant saplings around 10 locations. The initiative was kicked off by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on November 7.

Within eight hours, 10.15 lakh plants were either planted among citizens and government official. The saplings were distributed across an area of about 850 hectares. The initiative was being supervised jointly by the forest and irrigation departments and the authorities in Noida and Greater Noida. Plants such as sheesham, kanji, pakar, neem, arjun, aonla, chilbil, imlee, bargad and peepal were being planted by residents, army personnel, and officials.

Watch maker Titan Co and global information technology major HP have joined hands to offer a range of smart watches to be launched soon. The new relationship between HP Inc. and Titan combine innovative materials, design and custom technology to deliver products that are responsive. Titan Co CEO (Watches and Accessories Division) S Ravi Kant said the two companies would create a unique lifestyle offering for people not only in India, but across the world. This category of smart watches is going to change the way people view the art of timekeeping and beyond.

India test-fires supersonic interceptor missile

India has successfully test-fired an indigenously developed supersonic interceptor missile. It is capable of destroying a hostile ballistic missile, from a test range off the Odisha coast. At around 12.52 hours, the interceptor hit the target missile successfully at an altitude of about 15 kilometres. The test was conducted to validate various parameters of the interceptor in flight mode. This is the eighth trial.

NITI Aayog in dialogue with China’s think tank DRC

To closer economic ties with China and to deliberate on macro economic issues, a team led by NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Arvind Panagariya will engage in a dialogue with China’s Development Research Centre (DRC) from November 23. It will be the first dialogue between NITI Aayog and the DRC after the body was constituted to replace the erstwhile Planning Commission.

Vizag Declaration Call for action plan for a disaster-resilient society

Four-day World Congress on Disaster Management has concluded with the unanimous adoption of ‘Vizag Declaration’ calling for a comprehensive action plan for a disaster-resilient society. The declaration drafted after deliberations by over 1,000 delegates from 40 countries and 20 States in 25 sessions. It recommended effective funding mechanism by creating national disaster mitigation fund for resource implementation of local plans and building a platform of knowledge management/good practices/innovations at local level.

Emami ropes in Parineeti to endorse new product

FMCG firm Emami has roped in Bollywood actress Parineeti Chopra to endorse its new skincare product BoroPlus Cocoa Soft Moisturising lotion. Without divulging details of the endorsement, Emami said the product targets young women between the age of 20-30. Parineeti is the latest entrant to the Emami endorsers’ club and becomes the face for brand BoroPlus which boasts an ensemble star power like Amitabh Bachchan & Kangana Ranaut.

India, Malaysia to deepen cooperation in security, defence: PM

India and Malaysia will deepen cooperation in security and defence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on November 23. He emphasised that the recent attacks globally and the “ceaseless” terror attempts against India and Afghanistan were a reminder of the global nature of terrorism.

Modi also complimented his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak for providing leadership in combating extremism and radicalisation, rejecting any link between terrorism and religion and in highlighting the “real values of Islam”. Appreciating Najib’s leadership in combating extremism and radicalisation, Modi said this is a great contribution an important aspect of global efforts against this challenge.

Novak Djokovic beats Roger Federer to win fourth consecutive ATP finals

Novak Djokovic won his fourth consecutive Barclays ATP World Tour Finals title to take his year’s earnings crashing through the $20million (£13.17m) barrier. The Serbian finished his sensational season in style by beating bearded Roger Federer 6-3 6-4 in 80 minutes. It was a re-match of the Wimbledon and US Open finals – and a repeat of the result.

The Swiss’ defeat means Andy Murray will finish the year as world No 2 for the first time and will be
drawn to avoid Djokovic until the Australian Open final in January. That is good news because the world No 1 has looked unstoppable for most of this year.

OBITUARY

Noted economist TS Papola passes away

The noted labour economist Dr. TS Papola passed away in Delhi at the age of 74. A founder Member, former director and currently honorary professor at the Institute for Studies in Industrial Development (ISID), New Delhi, Dr. Papola was also chairman, Giri Institute of Development Studies, Lucknow; founder member of the Institute for Human Development (IHD), New Delhi and Chairman of the Fourth State Finance Commission of Uttarakhand.
