L&T bags Rs 3,115 crore order for New Ganga Bridge Project

The heavy civil infrastructure business of L&T Construction, along with its joint venture partner, Daewoo E&C of South Korea, has won an order worth Rs 3,115 crore from the Bihar State Road Development Corporation Limited (BSRDCL) for the Ganga Bridge Project.

 About the Project 

  • The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract involves design and construction of greenfield six-lane extra-dosed cable bridge over Ganga river near Kachchi Dargah in Patna district on NH-30 to near Bidupur in Vaishali district on NH-103.
  • A 22-km road alignment, including a 9.76 km long extra-dosed bridge over Ganga river will be constructed.
  • The project, which also includes viaducts, railway over bridges, major bridges and road works, is scheduled to be completed in four years.

 About Ganga River 

  • The 2,525 km (1,569 mi) river rises in the western Himalayasin the Indian state of Uttarakhand, and flows south and east through the Gangetic Plain of North India into Bangladesh, where it empties into the Bay of Bengal.
  • The Ganga is the most sacred river to Hindus. It is also a lifeline to millions of Indians who live along its course and depend on it for their daily needs.
  • Ganga is worshipped as the goddess Ganga in Hinduism.
  • The Ganga Action Plan, an environmental initiative to clean up the river, has been a major failure thus far, due to corruption, lack of technical expertise,  poor environmental planning, and lack of support from religious authorities.
