Koneru Humpy won silver in World Women Rapid Championships 2023

World Rapid Chess C’ship: Koneru Humpy wins silver in women’s event; Vidit Gujarathi finishes fourth

At the 2023 World Rapid Chess Championships in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Koneru Humpy of India earned the silver medal in the women’s individual event on Thursday.

In a tie-break sudden-death on-time loss against Russian Anastasia Bodnaruk, the 36-year-old Indian grandmaster was forced to forfeit the crown. She now has a full set of medals from the women’s world fast championships, thanks to the silver.

She was named world champion in 2019 in Batumi, Georgia, after winning bronze in 2012 in Moscow, Russia.

Humpy had earlier defeated Kateryna Lagno in the last round, bringing her point total to nine from eleven matches, tying the score and forcing a tie-break with Bodnaruk. Lie Tingjie, who would go on to win bronze, was the opponent of the latter in their last round match.

With the black pieces, the Indian got off to a strong start in the opening game of the blitz tie break. But in the following game, where a draw was sufficient, Humpy blundered with the white pieces despite being in a stronger position, allowing Bodnaruk to mount a comeback.

After Humpy was unable to win the first sudden-death encounter despite having the upper hand with black pieces, the match finished in a tie.

Bodnaruk was named world champion after the Indian found herself in a terrible time pressure situation in the next game with the white pieces. The clock ran out and she eventually lost.
