RBI directs banks to make cyber security policies

RBI has asked banks to immediately put in place a cyber security policy to tackle internet-based threats to the banking system. The RBI said that it is essential to enhance the resilience of the banking system by improving the current defences in addressing cyber risks. The central bank asked all scheduled commercial banks to specify potential risks as “low, moderate, high and very high” and said they must report all “unusual cyber-security incidents”. It also said the new cyber security policy should be separate from the bank’s broader information technology policy.

World Bank classifies India lower-middle-income nation

The World Bank has dropped the use of developing nation tag for India in its specialised reports and instead classifies it as a “lower-middle-income” economy in South Asia. While India will be referred to as a lower-middle-income economy in all of World Bank’s analytical reports, it may be referred to as a developing country only in some of the generic communications.

India joins the Hague Code of Conduct against Ballistic Missile Proliferation

India has joined a global ballistic missile proliferation regime, but made it clear that it will not have any impact on the national security as well as country’s missile programmes. MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup said, “India has joined the Hague Code of Conduct (HCoC) against Ballistic Missile Proliferation by notifying the HCoC Central Contact in Vienna through diplomatic channels.”

Goyal, Prabhu and Chidambaram elected to Rajya Sabha

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, Power Minister Piyush Goyal and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram were today elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. Bharatiya Janata Party’s Goyal and Chidambaram of the Congress were elected from Maharashtra, along with four others. These were Praful Patel of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Vinay Sahasrabuddhe and Vikas Mahatme of the BJP and Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut.

India will not have power deficit for the first time in history

India will not have a power deficit this year, a first time in history. The situation officials say is an outcome of the current government’s initiatives to resolve burning issues like fuel scarcity. The country will have a surplus of 3.1% during peak hours and 1.1% during non-peak hours during 2016-17, latest data from the Central Electricity Authority shows.

Goa-born Sayonara Luxton takes charge as UK royal borough mayor

Goa-born Sayonara Luxton has taken charge as the mayor of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in southeast England. Councillor Luxton, in her 60s, had been serving as the deputy mayor of the area for the past year and was proposed to take over by former mayor Councillor Dee Quick.

The Conservative party mayor’s chosen charity will be The Household Cavalry and also actively supports the War Horse Memorial, which will be erected in Ascot and will commemorate the one million horses that lost their lives during World War I. Luxton moved from Goa to Dubai at the age of 21 to join other members of her family and had a successful career with Airbus Industries. She is in her third term as Sunningdale Councillor.

Sweden Best In The World, India Ranks 70th In Good Country Index

Sweden has been voted as the best country in the world when it comes to serving the interests of its people and contributing to the common good of humanity while India figured low at 70th position on a list of 163 nations. According to the ‘Good Country‘ 2015 index which seeks to measure how countries contribute to the global good, Sweden, relative to the size of its economy, does more “good” and less harm than any other country.

India-US ink MoU to boost energy security, clean energy cooperation

India has inked a pact with the US to enhance cooperation in energy security and climate change with an aim to promote sustainable growth. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of India and the United States was signed to enhance cooperation in energy security, clean energy and climate change. Power Secretary PK Pujari and US Ambassador to India Richard R Verma signed the MoU.

India-Singapore agree to up defence interaction

India and Singapore held the first dialogue between their defence ministers as they agreed to enhance the scale and complexity of existing bilateral military interaction, at a time when freedom of navigation in international waterways has emerged as a major concern. The first Defence Ministers’ Dialogue (DMD) between Manohar Parrikar and his Singaporean counterpart Ng Eng Henmarked raising of bilateral defence cooperation to the highest level.  The agreement will also see Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) working with a Singapore research agency on research-oriented projects.

Five new sports set for 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Five sports, including baseball, skateboarding and surfing, are set to feature at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after the IOC recommended them to attract a younger audience and boost local support for the Games. The International Olympic Committee must now rubber-stamp the inclusion of skateboarding, surfing, sports climbing and karate plus the joint baseball/softball bid at its session in Rio de Janeiro in August.

Nita Ambani first Indian woman nominated to IOC

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s wife Nita Ambani has been nominated for membership in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and will become the first Indian woman to be on the apex sporting body if she gets elected at the IOC Session scheduled from August 2 to 4. The Switzerland-based IOC is the supreme authority of the Olympic Movement and is responsible for holding of the summer and winter Olympics and Paralympics.

India’s Shubham Jaglan Clinches Maiden European Junior Golf Title

Shubham Jaglan, India’s 11-year-old golf prodigy, bagged his first-ever European Junior Championship, by a massive 13 strokes, at the Craigielaw Golf Club in Longniddry, Scotland. His three-round total was nine-under 207, with individual round scores being 69-72-66. At the 18-hole three-day competition in Scotland, Shubham led right from first day to clinch the prestigious title.

IOC unveils first ever team of refugees

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has unveiled its first ever team of refugees which will have 10 members and 12 officials and will compete at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games under the Olympic flag. The team includes five athletes from South Sudan, two from Syria, two from Democratic Republic of Congo and one from Ethiopia. The athletes, six men and four women, will compete in the sports of swimming, judo and athletics.
