Wendell Lira wins 2015 FIFA Puskas Award for best goal over Lionel Messi

Wendell Lira won the 2015 FIFA Puskas Award for his spinning bicycle kick while playing for Goianesia in the Brazilian Goias state championship. Lira, 27, upset the favoured Lionel Messi, who was a finalist for his goal for Barcelona against Athletic Bilbao in May’s Copa del Rey final. The Brazilian was honoured at the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday in Zurich, where Messi later took the top honour as World Player of the Year. “It is an honour to be here to get know famous players I’ve only seen on the screen before,” Lira said in accepting the award. “I thank my family and all those who voted for me. I should like to thank my wife and my daughter.”

No Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu this year

Days after the central government gave a go ahead to Jallikattu, the Supreme Court ruled that the bull-taming festival would not be celebrated in Tamil Nadu this year. Hearing a bunch of petitions against the government order, the apex court stayed the Centre’s notification allowing Jallikattu. The Animal Welfare Board had also filed a plea in the Supreme Court against the comeback of Jallikattu.

BSF starts ‘Operation Cold’ along International Border

Border Security Force (BSF) has launched ‘Operation Cold’ along the international border in Rajasthan covering Sriganganagar, Bikaner, Barmer and Jaisalmer that will continue till January 30. The Operation Cold was launched to contain any infiltration or intrusion from Pakistan in fog and cold wave weather conditions in the western desert. The Operation that was scheduled for January 17 has been preponed in view of the Pathankot terror attack and the high security alert in the country ahead of the Republic Day. As per the exercise, extra BSF jawans have been deployed at sensitive places and their round-the-clock drill has also begun in the border area.

E-enabled Track and store management systems inaugurated

Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu inaugurated Implementation of E-enabled Track Management System (TMS) & Mobile Application of TMS on Indian Railway and Track Inventory Management System on Northern Railways. Management of track maintenance involves handling of huge volumes of data statistics as well as dynamic analysis of various measurement and defects and planning, deployment of large resources. In order to bring efficiency and effectiveness in management practices, Railways felt the need of e-enablement of track maintenance practices on Web-Enabled IT platform.

DAC approves major changes in Defence Procurement Procedure

The Government of India has approved major changes to the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP). The Defence Acquisition Council, DAC chaired by the Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar which is the prime authority to lay down acquisition procedure gave its approval to the proposed changes. The new DPP (Defence Procurement Procedure) will streamline defence acquisitions made by the Defence establishments in India and give a big impetus to indigenisation through the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Telangana becomes first State to make gender education compulsory

Telangana has become the first State to introduce compulsory gender education at the graduate level; without repeating gender stereotypes in its bilingual textbook titled, ‘Towards a World of Equals.’ The book introduced on a pilot basis in engineering colleges affiliated to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU-Hyderabad) discusses gender in its composite form without limiting itself to crime against women. It also touches upon complex subjects like female-centric history and male-female relationships.

China reshuffles military headquarters in major revamp

In a major military reform, Chinese President Xi Jinping has reorganised four army headquarters by replacing them with 15 new agencies under the Central Military Commission (CMC) headed by him, tightening his control over the world’s largest force. The new structure includes new commissions such as discipline inspection, politics and law and science and technology and general office. The reform includes formation of five more divisions, administration, auditing, international cooperation, reform, organisational structure and strategic planning.

India-Australia social security pact comes into operation

A new social security agreement signed between India and Australia has come into operation enabling people of both nations to avail retirement benefits in each other’s country, a pact likely to boost bilateral business linkages. Australian Minister for Social Services Christian Porter and Minister for Small Business and Assistant Treasurer Kelly O’Dwyer said the Commonwealth government wanted to make sure people who live and work in more than one country are not disadvantaged. The Agreement signed in November 2014 came into operation on January 1, 2016.

CIRB Hisar becomes second institute to clone buffalo in India

Scientists at Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes (CIRB) in Hisar claimed to have successfully produced a cloned buffalo offspring ‘Cirb Gaurav’. CIRB Director Dr Inderjeet Singh said that the cloned buffalo calf is distinct from the earlier clones produced in India. As this is produced from cells of ventral side of tail of superior bull buffalo, this part is least exposed to sunlight and may have less mutation rate, and can be good choice for isolation of donor cells to produce healthy clones.

Lionel Messi wins Ballon d’Or for fifth time

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d’Or award for the world’s best player for the fifth time. The 28-year-old Argentine had 41.33% of the vote, with Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo (27.76%) second and Barca’s Neymar (7.86%) third. Either Messi or Ronaldo, who became a three-time winner last year, have won the past eight awards.

OBITUARY

First female F1 driver Maria Teresa de Filippis passes away

Maria Teresa de Filippis, the first woman to compete in a world championship Formula One grand prix, has died at the age of 89. The Italian started three grand prix races in a privately entered Maserati 250F, finishing a best place of 10th at Spa-Francorchamps in 1958. De Filippis was a founding member of the Maserati Club and also the honorary president of the former drivers’ association. The Former F1 driver Alexander Wurz paid tribute to De Filippis, writing on Twitter: “We lost another pioneering member of the Motorsport world today, Maria Teresa de Filippis, the first woman to race in F1. RIP”
