India wins more than 150 medals at World Police and Fire Games

India has won a record 156 medals, including 89 gold and 50 silvers, in the World Police and Fire games held at the United States. The 50-member Indian delegation competed in seven categories: athletics, wrestling, boxing, judo, archery, swimming and shooting.  Richa Mishra from Central Reserve Police Force, who won six golds and two silvers in swimming events. Kulwinder Kaur, an assistant sub inspector with Punjab Police bagged five gold medals in the track and field events.

Hosts United States won by far the most medals, 1,777, including nearly 700 golds. Canada finished second with nearly 430 medals. More than 12,000 athletes — all of them belonging to various law enforcement and firefighting agencies — from 70 countries competed in over 60 sports in the 10-day event.

This is for the first time that the Indian contingent’s medal tally has crossed 100. The previous best was at Belfast, Northern Ireland in 2013 when India won 83 medals.
