Ousted President of Egypt Mohammed Morsi has been sentenced to death by the Egypt Court over 2011 mass prison break that took place during the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak. He was already sentenced to imprisonment of 20 years for ordering the arrest and torture of protesters during his time in power.
As per the rules, Egypt’s religious authorities should give their opinion before the sentence can be carried out. Morsi was removed from the President post by the military in July 2013 following mass street protests against his rule. After his arrest, the higher authorities have banned his Muslim Brotherhood movement. Thousands of Mohammed Morsi’s supporters have been arrested in the last one year.
Mohammed Morsi was one among the 100 plus defendants to be sentenced to death for jail breaking. According to Morsi’s supporters, the cases against him are politically motivated.
