1. Hindustan Copper Ltd Signs MoU with IIT (ISM), Dhanbad for Technical Collaboration

Hindustan Copper Limited and Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the HCL Corporate Office in Kolkata in the presence of Arun Kumar Shukla, HCL’s CEO, and Professor Rajiv Shekhar, IIT (ISM) Director.

As the only copper miner in India, HCL owns all the operating mining leases of copper ore in the country, so the first technical collaboration with IIT (ISM), Dhanbad, is a big deal for HCL. The majority of ore production happens underground right now, and the annual production hovers at around four million tons.

2. Varanasi Cantt Railway Station gets 5-star certification for providing high-quality, nutritious food

Varanasi Cantt Railway Station has been awarded a five-star ‘Eat Right Station’ certification for providing high-quality, nutritious food to passengers, the Railways said in a statement on Thursday. The certification is awarded by FSSAI to railway stations that set benchmarks in providing safe and wholesome food to passengers.

The station is awarded a certificate upon a conclusion of an FSSAI-empanelled third-party audit agency with ratings from one to five. The five-star rating indicates full compliance by the station to ensure safe and hygienic food is available to passengers.

3. India Takes Over Leadership of the Asian Pacific Postal Union

India has taken over the leadership of the Asia Pacific Postal Union (APPU) in January 2023. Dr Vinaya Prakash Singh will take over the charge of Secretary General of the Union for a tenure of 4 years. This is the result of the elections during the 13th APPU Congress held in August-September 2022.

There are 32 members in this international organisation from the Asia-Pacific. It is a specific department inside the UN. The sole Restricted Union of the Universal Postal in the area is this one. The Asia Pacific Postal Union’s headquarters are in Bangkok, Thailand.

4. Madhya Pradesh Government Launch Chief Minister’s Residential Land Rights Scheme

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched the Madhya Pradesh Residential Land Rights scheme (Mukhyamantri Awasiya Bhu Adhikar Yojana) to distribute free leases of residential land to selected beneficiaries. The scheme aims to provide free plots to the poor living in rural areas for building their houses. The land will be offered completely free of cost and along with the plot, the benefits of all other schemes will also be delivered.

5. Odakkuzhal Award 2022 for Writer Ambikasuthan Mangad

Writer Ambikasuthan Mangad has been selected for Odakuzhal Award 2022 for his collection of short stories titled Pranavayu. The award consists of Rs 30,000, citation, and plaque. Instituted by the Guruvayurappan Trust, the award is being given for the best collection of short stories in Malayalam.

The award will be presented on the occasion of the 45th death anniversary of Mahakavi G. Sankara Kurup, who established the Guruvayurappan Trust, on February 2 at the Ernakulam Samastha Kerala Sahithya Parishad building here. Literary critic Dr. M. Leelavathi will present the award to Ambikasuthan Mangad.

6. Sundararaman Ramamurthy assumes charge as BSE MD & CEO

Sundararaman Ramamurthy assumed charge as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BSE, the exchange said in a release. The appointment comes after BSE’s erstwhile MD & CEO Ashish Chauhan resigned from the stock exchange in July 2022 and moved to the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Ramamurthy had served as a senior member of NSE since its inception.

7. UN-Habitat’s World Habitat Awards 2023: Odisha wins award for Jaga mission

Odisha won the UN- Habitat’s World Habitat Awards 2023 for the Jaga mission. The mission is a 5T initiative of the state. The awards recognize and showcase innovative, exceptional, and game-changing housing concepts, initiatives, and programmes from throughout the world.

The Jaga mission is a land titling and slum rehabilitation initiative that attempts to improve slum residents’ lives.

8. Kuldeep Singh Pathania elected as speaker of Himachal Pradesh Assembly

Kuldeep Singh Pathania, a senior Congress lawmaker and five-time MLA, was unanimously elected Speaker of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly by voice vote on January 5, 2023. Following his election, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur accompanied Mr. Pathania to the Speaker’s chair.

9. The Man Behind India’s Space Dream, Satish Dhawan is passed away

Dr. Satish Dhawan (25 September 1920 – 3 January 2002) was an Indian mathematician and aerospace engineer, widely regarded as the “father of experimental fluid dynamics research in India”. Born in Srinagar, Dhawan was educated in India and further on in United States.

Dhawan was one of the most eminent researchers in the field of turbulence and boundary layers, leading the successful and indigenous development of the Indian space programme. He succeeded M. G. K. Menon, as the third chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1972.

10. Jason Moo appointed as CEO of Bank of Singapore

Bank of Singapore (BoS), the private banking arm of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC), announced that it has appointed Jason Moo as its new CEO. BoS’s announcement comes after Bloomberg’s article on Dec 26, 2022. Moo will succeed Bahren Shaari officially from March 6 onwards.
