  1. Parineeti Chopra, First Indian Woman Ambassador for Tourism Australia

Parineeti Chopra who has been appointed as the first Indian woman Ambassador in ‘Friend of Australia’ (FOA) advocacy panel by Tourism Australia.

The Friends of Australia programme has been devised as a way for Tourism Australia to foster mutually beneficial long term friendship with those they regard as unique, positive and influential storytellers. With this, Parineeti joins fellow Indian Friends of Australia, chef Sanjeev Kapoor and renowned cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle.

  1. Sankara Narayanan takes charge as MD & CEO of Vijaya Bank

R A Sankara Narayanan has taken charge as Managing Director and Chief Excecutive Officer of Vijaya Bank. He has taken over the resigns of the bank from Kishore Sansi, who reached superannuation on August 31.

Narayanan is a post-graduate in Public Administration with an MBA in Finance, CAIIB, PGDPM, PGDFM, DTIRM, DCP and BRM.

  1. HDFC Bank corp banking head moves back to Citi Bank

HDFC Bank’s group head for corporate banking has quit India’s most valuable bank to return to Citi Group for a larger role, according to people aware of the matter.

Balasubramanian, 46, will take on a larger role in Citi to head the corporate banking for South Asia. He has tendered his resignation at HDFC Bank and is hoping to join Citi before January.

Balasubramanian was earlier reporting to Kaizad Bharucha, executive director, who leads the wholesale banking business for HDFC Bank.

  1. Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani Flags off two week long Ma Narmada Mahotsav Yatra

Gujarat’s Chief Minister Vijay Rupani flagged off the ‘Ma Narmada Mahotsav Yatra’ from Surendranagar which will cover 24 districts, 7 cities & over 7200 villages.

Notably, the two weeks long ‘Ma Narmada Mahotsav Yatra’ is being celebrated after the completion of Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada river.

The dam finally completed fifty-six years after the foundation stone laid by the state government on June 17 got permission from the Narmada Control Authority to close all the 30 gates of the dam, raising its height to 138.68 meters.

  1. India’s first hyperloop coming up in Andhra Pradesh

The journey between Vijayawada and Amaravati, could soon be a 5-minute ride, with Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) signing an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh government to build a connecting road between the two cities.

The proposed route for the connector would be between the city centres of Vijayawada and Amravati. The project will use a Public Private Partnership model with funding primarily from private investors.

  1. Ujjivan Bank to replace loans with certificate deposits

Ujjivan Small Finance Bank has said that it will bring down its cost of funds by up to 150 basis points during the current financial year by replacing 75% of its bank loans with borrowings using money market instruments including certificate of deposits.

The decision follows the grant of a scheduled bank status to Ujjivan. Ujjivan, which operated a microfinance business, received a licence to operate as a small finance bank earlier this year.

  1. BSNL, Coriant Tie up to Chart 5G

The state-owned telecom firm BSNL expects to start a field trial of 5G services by the end of this financial year.  The state-run firm has started discussion with Larsen & Toubro and HP for end devices that will be required for 5G services.

Under the terms of the agreement, Coriant and BSNL will cooperate to accelerate network architecture and service innovation for 5G services.

Latency is going to be in 5G technology which is time taken by data to reach one point to other. 5G ecosystem will be developed based on used cases which will differ from country to country.

  1. September 8, 2017: International Literacy Day

The 51st International Literacy Day is being celebrated on 8th September, 2017 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi and the theme announced by UNESCO is `Literacy in a digital world’.

The programme would include; felicitation to the dignitaries, distribution of Saakshar Bharat Awards to the best performing States, Districts, Gram Panchayats and NGOs.

The International Literacy Day is celebrated on 8th September every year throughout the world.  On this day, in the year 1965 the World Congress of Ministers of Education met in Tehran for the first time to discuss the programme of education at the international level. 

The UNESCO in its 14th Session in November, 1966, declared 8th September as the International Literacy Day.

  1. UJALA Scheme Launched in Melaka, Malaysia

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) , under Ministry of Power, Government of India has launched UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable Lighting for All) Scheme in the State of Melaka, Malaysia.  

The successful Indian model of UJALA scheme has become a sought-after example for the different nations of the world and will now be implemented in Melaka to extend programme benefits to people of the region.

  1. United States of America proposes New Sanctions against North Korea

United States of America (USA) proposeda range of new sanctions against North Korea, including an oil ban and a freeze on leader Kim Jong-un’s assets.

They drafted a UN resolution in response to Pyongyang’s latest nuclear test which will be considered by members of the UN Security Council.

The draft calls for bans on supplying a range of oil products to North Korea and purchasing its textile exports

  1. India to Host Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in 2019

India will host the 2019 edition of the Commonwealth (Youth, Junior and Senior) Weightlifting Championships.

The Executive Board of Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation met on Wednesday at Gold Coast, Australia and decided to allot the 2019 edition of the competitions to India. The current edition of the tournament is being held at the Gold Coast.
