1. Veteran industrialist BM Khaitan passes away

Veteran industrialist BM Khaitan passes away. Veteran industrialist and Williamson Magor Group patriarch Brij Mohan Khaitan died on 1 June 2019 at his residence in Kolkata. He was 92. Khaitan is survived by his younger son Aditya and daughter Divya Jalan. Also known as the “evergreen tea man of India” globally, he had made the tea industry “Indian-owned” in the twilight era of independence.

2. June 3 is celebrated as the World Bicycle Day across the globe

June 3 is celebrated as the World Bicycle Day across the globe. In April 2018, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared 3 June as International World Bicycle Day. The resolution for World Bicycle Day recognizes the uniqueness, longevity, and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation.

3. CSO-GDP growth slips to 5.8% in Q4 in 2018-19

CSO-GDP growth slips to 5.8% in Q4 in 2018-19. As per the data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the rate of gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the January-March quarter of 2018-19 decreased to 5.8% as compared to the forecast of 6.5%.

The economic growth rate for the full 2018-19 financial year stood at a 5-year low of 6.8% in comparison to 7.1 %. The reason behind the slip is the slowdown in the countrys key sectors like agriculture, industry and manufacturing in the past nine months. The countrys fiscal deficit in full 2018-19 stood at 3.4% of GDP.

India has lost its spot as the worlds fastest growing economy to China. The Indian economy has lost its spot as the world’s fastest-growing economy to China. A Reuters survey of economists said that India registered 6.3% annual growth in the January-March quarter, its slowest pace in six quarters. China recorded a growth of 6.4% in the March Quarter.

Under-20 Eurasian Athletics Championship: Indian juniors bagged 5 gold, 3 silver medals. Under-20 Eurasian Athletics Championships held at Almaty, Kazakhstan, Indian juniors bagged 5 gold and 3 silver medals.

The national teams from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Iran, India, and Tajikistan participated in a 2-day event held on May 29-30, 2019. Sreekiran bagged the boys’ 800m gold with a time of 1:54.62 while Rohit Yadav added the fifth gold medal to India’s tally, finishing on top in the boys’ javelin throw by clearing a distance of 74.55m.

Anton Aditya Subowo re-elected as President of Badminton Asia. Indonesia’s Anton Aditya subowo re-elected as president of badminton for another four year period. There were seven people who were selected as the vice-presidents. India’s Badminton Asia’s president Himanta Biswa Sarma was one among them.  40 countries were voted for the posts of President, Vice President, and Secretary-General. 2019 Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships officially crowned the best mixed national badminton teams in Asia

8. RBI approves appointment of Rakesh Makhija as Axis Bank Chairman

Axis Bank said on Monday afternoon that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the appointment of Rakesh Makhija as the bank’s chairman. He has been appointed as the Non-Executive (Part-time) Chairman of the Bank, for a period of 3 years. He will assume charge on July 18 and continue till July 17, 2022.

10. James Webb Space Telescope successfully passed final thermal vacuum test

James Webb Space Telescope successfully passed final thermal vacuum test. NASA’s $8.8-billion James Webb Space Telescope, the world’s largest and most expensive one, has successfully passed final thermal vacuum test, making its parts cleared for use in space.

The 6.5-meter diameter telescope has 18 gold-coated mirrors and a tennis court-sized sun-shield to gather light and protect its instruments. The telescope set to launch in 2021. It took 20 years to build.

11. Financial Literacy Week 2019 organised by RBI

The Financial Literacy Week 2019 will be observed from 3 June to 7 June. It is an annual initiative by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to promote awareness on key topics through a focused campaign.

The theme of Financial Literacy Week 2019 is ‘Farmers’ which focuses on how they can benefit by being a part of the formal banking system.
