China proposes joint mining of Indian Ocean with India

China has expressed its eagerness in cooperating with India on deep seabed mining in the Indian Ocean. It is reported earlier that the China’s deep diving vessel have founded large deposits of precious metals like gold and silver in the Indian Ocean.

The Deputy Director of China Ocean Mineral Resource R&D Association, He Zongyu, who proposed the joint mining of Indian Ocean, termed India an Ideal Partner and said both countries are on about the same level in terms of the development of deep seabed mining. He also added deep seabed mining is high-cost and high-risk work, with costs for a mining site topping $1.6 billion.

The proposal from China is totally unexpected and it came ahead of PM Modi’s three-day visit from May 14. In his maiden visit, Modi will hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang in Xi’an and Beijing.
