Antarctic Ocean’s carbon dioxide absorption increased

The findings that Antarctic Ocean which has been absorbing increasing levels of carbon dioxide over the past decade, may have ocean’s carbon sink might have begun to “saturate”. seasonally absorbs vast amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and releases it back later. accounts for 40 per cent of the global oceanic uptake of that man-made carbon dioxide.

Renowned Water policy expert Ramaswamy R Iyer passes away

Renowned water policy expert Ramaswamy R Iyer died on 9 September 2015 due to severe bout of viral fever in New Delhi. He was 86. He was born in October 1929 in Thakkalai, Tamil Nadu. He is widely known for producing a rich body of commentary on water policy and environmental issues.

Snapdeal launches instant refund facility

Online marketplace Snapdeal has launched its instant refund facility to help its customers get refunds within one hour of receiving the returned products. The instant refund will be completed using Immediate Payments System (IMPS) transfers.

Prestigious award for defence scientist G Satheesh Reddy

The Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), London has conferred G Satheesh Reddy, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, with the Society’s 2015 Silver Medal for work contributing to major advances or contributions in aerospace. He is the first defence scientist working in India to be honoured with the award by the Society.

Leander Paes wins US Open mixed doubles title with Martina Hingis

Leander Paes created history by winning the US Open mixed doubles title with Swiss partner Martina Hingis and surpassed compatriot and former partner Mahesh Bhupathi’s record. The 42-year-old Paes now has won nine Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, against Bhupathi’s eight.

Rakesh Sharma takes over as Canara Bank MD and CEO

State-run Canara Bank has announced that Rakesh Sharma has assumed charge as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Before joining Canara Bank, Sharma was MD and CEO of Lakshmi Vilas Bank since March 7, 2014. Sharma began his banking career with State Bank of India wherein he had raised to the level of Chief General Manager in his long distinguished career of over 33 years.

Maharashtra government to organise Tadoba festival in Mumbai

The Maharashtra government is all set to hold a three-day ‘Tadoba festival’ during November in Mumbai. The state government has planned to showcase the making the tiger sanctuary in Chandrapur district a world class entity.

Rajasthan gets $500 million loans from ADB for urban services

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed two agreements for $500 million loans with the government for the management of urban services in the state of Rajasthan. ADB said $250 million policy loan will be used to help Rajasthan to finance creation of a corporate-style state body to promote urban services development and an independent utility in Jaipur to oversee water and wastewater operations in the state capital. Rest of $250 million project loan will support water system improvements in five cities – Hanumangarh, Jhunjhunu, Pali, Sri Ganganagar, and Tonk – which currently have low piped water coverage and high water losses.

Third International Hindi Conference to be held in New Jersey

US based Hindi Sangam Foundation will be organising the Third International Hindi Conference at Rutgers University, New Jersey from March 4-6, 2016 to promote Hindi in America. Rutgers has agreed to host the 2016 conference as it foresaw great potential in establishing a strong bond with the Indian-American community.

India-Australia naval exercise – ‘AUSINDEX 15’

India and Australia have begin their first bilateral naval exercise that will focus on anti-submarine warfare as the two countries look at deepening defence cooperation especially in the Indian Ocean. AUSINDEX 15 is being conducted off the east coast of India from September 11-19.

Government approves $400-million plan to procure armed Heron TP drones from Israel

The government has quietly approved the purchase of 10 missile-armed drones from Israel — a crucial acquisition that will enhance India’s cross-border military strike capability. The $400-million proposal for buying armed Heron TP drones from Israel was cleared.

National highways to grow by 50,000km in 6 months

The road transport and highways ministry will add nearly 50,000 km of roads to the National Highways (NH) network in the country in the next six months. In the past 15 months, the new government has added about 7,000 km of roads to the NH length and at present it’s little more than one lakh km.
