RS Sharma appointed as the Chairman of TRAI

IT secretary RS Sharma has been appointed the Chairman of TRAI or Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. The appointments committee of the Cabinet approved Sharma’s appointment for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is the earliest. Sharma is an IAS officer from 1978 Jharkhand batch and replaces Rahul Khullar, who had retired in May.

  • The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is the independent regulator of the telecommunications business in India.
  • TRAI was established on February 20, 1997 by an Act of Parliament to regulate telecom services and tariffs in India.
  • TRAI’s mission is to create and nurture conditions for growth of telecommunications in India to enable the country to have a leading role in the emerging global information society.
  • The TRAI Act was amended by an ordinance, effective from 24 January 2000, establishing a Telecommunications Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) to take over the adjudicatory and disputes functions from TRAI.
  • The Headquarters of TRAI is in New Delhi.
