Reasoning Questions : Data Sufficiency -268

This section consists of problems in which a question on any topic such as coding- decoding , puzzle test , blood relations etc , is put forward , followed by certain statement containing facts providing clues to solve the questions ,.

the candidate is required to find out which of the given statements is / are sufficient to answer the given questions .

Steps in solving Data Sufficiency questions :

These type of questions consists of problems on any reasoning topics like blood relation, coding-decoding, direction test, ranking, seating arrangement, etc. followed by statements containing clues to solve the question
· The candidates are supposed to find out which of the given statements is or are sufficient to solve the given question
· This section tests the candidate’s efficiency to determine the information necessary to solve the given problem
· We have to make sure whether the question can be solved with the help of information provided in the 1st statement or 2nd statement or together in the 1st and the 2nd statement
· We are not supposed to assume anything beyond the information given in the question and the following statements

Each of the questions given below consists of a statement and / or a question and two statements numbered I and II given below it. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statement(s) is / are sufficient to answer the given question. Read the both statements and

Give answer (A) if the data in Statement I alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in Statement II alone are not sufficient to answer the question.
Give answer (B) if the data in Statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question, while the data in Statement I alone are not sufficient to answer the question.
Give answer (C) if the data either in Statement I or in Statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question.
Give answer (D) if the data even in both Statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question.
Give answer(E) if the data in both Statements I and II together are necessary to answer the question.

1)What is the number?
I)The sum of the two digits is 8. The ratio of the two digits is 1 :3.
II)The product of the two digit of a number is 12. The quotient of two digits is 3.
A)I alone sufficient while II alone not sufficient to answer
B)II alone sufficient while I alone not sufficient to answer
c)Either I or II alone sufficient to answer
D)Both I and II are not sufficient to answer
E)Both I and II are necessary to answer

ANSWER c)Either I or II alone sufficient to answer

2)What will be the total weight of 10 poles, each of the same weight ?
I)One-fourth of the weight of each pole is 5 kg.
II)The total weight of three poles is 20 kilograms more than the total weight of two poles.

A)I alone is sufficient while II alone is not sufficient
B)II alone is sufficient while I alone is not sufficient
C)Either I or II is sufficient
D)Neither I nor II is sufficient
E)Both I and II are sufficient

Answer C)Either I or II is sufficient
Explanation:

From I, we conclude that weight of each pole = (4×5) kg = 20 kg.
So, total weight of 10 poles = (20 x 10) kg = 200 kg.

From II, we conclude that:
Weight of each pole = (weight of 3 poles) – (weight of 2 poles) = 20 kg.
So, total weight of 10 pojes = (20 x 10) kg = 200 kg.

3)How many children does M have ?
I)H is the only daughter of X who is wife of M.
II)K and J are brothers of M.
A)I alone is sufficient while II alone is not sufficient
B)II alone is sufficient while I alone is not sufficient
C)Either I or II is sufficient
D)Neither I nor II is sufficient
E)Both I and II are sufficient

Answer D)Neither I nor II is sufficient
Explanation:
From I, we conclude that H is the only daughter of M. But this does not indicate that M has no son. The information given in II is immaterial.

4)Among T, V, B, E and C, who is the third from the top when arranged in the descending order of their weights ?
I)B is heavier than T and C and is less heavier than V who is not the heaviest.
II)C is heavier than only T.
A)I alone is sufficient while II alone is not sufficient
B)II alone is sufficient while I alone is not sufficient
C)Either I or II is sufficient
D)Neither I nor II is sufficient
E)Both I and II are sufficient

Answer A)I alone is sufficient while II alone is not sufficient.
Explanation:
From I, we have: B > T, B > C, V > B. Thus, V is heavier than each one of B, T and C. But V is not the heaviest. So, E is the heaviest.
Thus, we have the order. E>V>B>T>C or E>V>B>C>T. Clearly, B is third from the top.

5)What is the two-digit number?
I)The difference between the two digits is 9.
II)The sum of the digits is equal to the difference between the two digits.
A)I alone is sufficient while II alone is not sufficient
B)II alone is sufficient while I alone is not sufficient
C)Either I or II is sufficient
D)Neither I nor II is sufficient
E)Both I and II are sufficient.
